Rocco Memorial Ride 500 aka Bog Standard or Pinner-Brecon-Pinner (PBP)
Willesden CC member Martin Lucas has kindly sent in the following report:
As a fond memorial to Rocco, a select group of long distance cyclists gathered early on Saturday 18th August. Their aim was to follow a route established by Rocco himself from Willesden territory to Brecon in SE Wales and back for a distance of over 500 km; a good fast route on major roads with a few hills to test the legs and descents to test the nerves. Add a tandem into the mix to speed progress on the flat and all the essential ingredients were in place, even the summer made a re-appearance.
The ride was completed in true Rocco Rocket style with the group remaining together for a very sociable weekend awheel. Rumour has it that the route will be established as an Audax UK permanent event so that others can ride in the future.

Road Race details
Just an update with more details for the Road Race…
The morning race is now full with 90 riders and reserves are filling up, the afternoon race has about 45 riders at the moment which is great news.
So far the following people have volunteered to help out and I still have spaces which are mainly for marshalling. There are several Willesden riders taking part in the morning race and due to that shortage we are desperate for more people in the morning.
Thanks to those who have offered to help so far.
Willesden Riders (am)
Volunteers so far
Richard Jerome – Organiser, Photo Finish, driver if needed.
Tom and Charlotte Zittel – Signing on (7am – 9:30am) and (11:30am – 1pm)
Haymie Thacker – Signing on (7am – 9:30am) and finish marshal at 11:30am approx and 5pm approx.
Catering – Nici Savage and Suzanne Cooper
Chief Marshall – John Wheatley (7am until finish, TBC with John Wheatley)
First Aid and Driving – Ray Kelly
John Williams – Riding am race and driver pm race.
I am still in need of around 15 marshals for the entire day, obviously without marshals the race will have to be cancelled. If you have entered the morning race, I would appreciate it if you could assist with marshalling in the afternoon.
Many thanks
Richard

London 2012 Men’s Road Race
Friday 27th. Still no idea where I’m going to watch the men’s race. Looking like the sofa. Hold on, Rich Cooper has been doing some homework, and has found a route from Ealing all the way to almost Box Hill without riding on closed roads! We are ON! And the sun is still out! And Cav is definitely going to win this. This is so great, never mind I forgot to put suncream on, or pack any sandwiches. Keith E and Marianne, plus Rich, Suzanne and me head for the hills.
There’s a big crowd already at Headley, where there’s a camp site and sectioned off areas, for Redhill CC, Addiscombe CC, plus someone called Jeff. These huge areas are by no means full but we can’t get in even though we are all good mates of Jeff honest and we are all second claim Redhill/Addiscombe. We find a spot in front of some Dutch people. The useless security staff (boy are they rubbish) say we may not stand there, as the Dutch people put their chairs out 3 hours ago. Europe is finished. Still, we are practically front row, roadside here.
Not long now and nine laps fly past. All the time we still believe in Team GB. They look relaxed, in control… After the last circuit everyone moves to get view of the big screen. There’s one guest of Addiscombe CC who just will not sit down, even though about 5000 people behind him have a restricted view because of his arse.
Thanks to Rich for a great route out and a brilliant day. Sunday’s outlook – wet, but silver…

Wiggo and the Willesden
You may have heard that Bradley Wiggins has won this year’s Tour de France. What you may not know is that Sean Bannister coached him in his early days.
A nice article with quotes from Sean can be found in Saturday’s Guardian here

24hour Time Trial – Mark Brooking’s Report
While Wiggo was finishing a bit of a ride Willesden were in action up in Cheshire.
Stuart Birnie was second by a mere 8 miles with 480.723. New member Jane Swain wearing Willesden pink set a new ladies Vest record for ladies tricycle with 333.628. She also beat my best by 15 miles so I will have to be brave and have another go.
I lost my mixed Longbarrow best to Ralph Dadswell and Marina Bloom who added 23 miles to my previous best with 424 to set a new Comp record.
A good weekend for cycling all round
Mark.
