WCC Malorees Go-Ride Races.

go-ride_logo
Yesterday was the second and final part of the Willesden CC’s Spring Go-Ride racing at Malorees school.

The forecast rain did not appear and the grass track was in good shape for the day’s racing. A hallmark of this mini-series has been good turnouts and very competitive racing by the local young riders. Yesterday we had 22 riders ranging between 4 and 12 years old, with the youngest still sporting a natty pair of stabilizers. I must say that bike handling skills were very impressive, with not one faller or collision throughout the day. Well done all to all racers and well done to Ray Kelly and Paul Kaffel for coaching the children so well and for making the whole day possible.

We managed to cram 10 races and an “All-Stars” prize presentation into a couple of hours. All the children were fantastic, giving a great show to all the adults who loudly cheered from the “Grandstands”.

Thanks to Vyv Baker and Janice Kelly who ably managed a last minute rush of entries as well as keeping everyone supplied in tea and cake. A special treat for Ray and me was that Rod and Roger Woodford took down the course and packed every thing away whilst we were sorting out the prizes – thank you guys, you’re up for a medal next time! Defo!

So here is the bit you been waiting for…… the full results covered from every possible angle. Just click here to download the results (PDF Format) —> 2015-04-26 Malorees Results

All the children and adults enjoyed the day, so there is a real demand for more races in the summer, so watch this blog for more details on possible dates.

Boulters Bash 110km Audax

Ian and Pauline Why organised a superb mid-week Audax yesterday.  Ian had ordered good weather for the event and it was delivered in buckets and on time. This was to the complete satisfaction of all riders, many of whom were stripped down to shorts and summer jerseys.

Ian and Pauline’s smooth management of the signing on process lent a calm and unruffled atmosphere to the start of the event, coping easily with over half of the 40+ strong field who were entering-on-the-line. They also laid on  Ray Kelly to provide background banter and to test drive the cafe’s bacon sarny/cappuccino combo – a brave man that!

The Captain and Mr Back do the “Sky Stem Stare” thing.

As soon as ten o’clock arrived, we left – sorry ten o’clock it was nothing personal. The Captain, Miles Back and Mrs Back rode as a team, immediately setting a tempo that enabled us to move in to a very strong and unassailable last position.

Once out of Maidhead the route settled in to a string of quite and delightful lanes as we streamed along to the turn at Pangbourne. All the necessary info controls were in safe positions, easy to locate and simple to remember. After a  short excursion off route in Pangbourne to cycle past the Lamborghini shows rooms we were soon in the Pangbourne cafe to be greeted by Jim and Wendy Mears on Brevet card stamping duties.

I had my customary mid ride meal of beans on toast. Danny Pollock of the Gregarios is renouned for setting standards for this bean based nutrition. My serving rated an impressive 9/10 on the Pollox scale.

Whilst on my second cappuccino Jim reveled that Jim McKay had not been though yet. This could not be true – Jim nips along at formidable pace. I thought he must have whizzed through so fast that he was somehow missed. Moments later my jaw swung open as Mr McK appeared. He was missing his chain, his rear derailleur and most of the skin off one knuckle. A pothole had unseated him and whilst lying on the ground he also managed to break the fall of the following rider. A bit shocked but reasonably in tact Jim had to abandon and was ferried back home by the ever helpful Jim and Wendy.

The return leg saw the Captain make a calculated attack – to me it had all the hallmarks of a hard rider off to film lambs is a field to post on to Facebook. The hills of the second half of the ride were quite demanding and we arrived back at a deserted finish except for Ian and Pauline had dutifully waited for us to return.

It was a great event, well run with a spot-on route sheet. Well done the Whys – you may have secured this gig forever!

Results from Final week of Winter track League

There were two evenings of racing over the last week to finish off the track league at the Olympic velodome. On Monday 23rd Connor and Alex rode the 3 events with Connor taking third in the elimination and 4th in the points race. Despite some great efforts from Alex, Andrew Smith gained enough points over the three events to be equal with Connor on points overall. On Thursday with a good crowd in attendance of Willesden supporters Marianne, Jayne, Tom and Connor rode three events each. They started with an Elimination race with Connor winning and Tom taking 5th. Jayne come second in the ladies race with Marianne staying in contention . This was followed by a Scratch race in which Connor came 4th just edging out his rival Andrew Smith. Jayne come third in the ladies scratch. The last race was a points race and Connor came third with Jayne 5th in the ladies race. We all now waited for the final points to be added and a great result for the Club with Connor winning the ‘C’ league and Jayne second in the Ladies League.
