Windy Wednesday Willesden Widers

On a windy Wednesday night, several Willesden riders set out for 11 laps of gruelling solo punishment at the second Westerley 10 on the Hillingdon circuit.

Chris James: 29.2? (sorry, can’t read my handwriting for that last digit…)
Melissa Arkinstall: 29.33 (who would like it pointed out this was ‘just for fun’ and she ‘was more concerned with getting home for dinner’, though at the end was claiming ‘not hungry anymore’)
Stuart Birnie: 27:20 (impressively beating his previous Westerley 10 time by nearly a minute, fuelled by a week of relaxation in Turkey) Ed Packard: 25:35 (3 seconds slower than the first Westerley 10, and interpreted as further evidence of a terminal form slump)
The winner, I think, was Malcolm Woolsey with a 24:40, but this is all to be confirmed on the Westerley website in due course!

A day (or two) at the races

Richard Jerome has made his debut on the blog with reports of his recent races.

Welcome Richard.

AW cycles road race – Woodcote 3rd April

The race was going quite well for me until the bunch was split by a horse that had been spooked by the cyclists. I was at the back recovering fromgoing up Goring Hill and spent the rest of the race trying to catch the bunch. I was joined half a lap later by another 10-ish riders who were also victims of the same incident and we all worked well together to try and getback to the main race and use the race as training.

With half a lap to go Itried to get away on one of the hills and was joined by two other riders and we managed to get away from our group and redeemed ourselves slightly.

Thames Velo Road Race – Great Milton

I left quite early for this race and it was a good job as I managed tobreak my car on the M40. Luckily my Dad was able to get out to me and weabandoned my car and he took me to the HQ.

It was a very windy day and a few small groups had managed to get away butnot for long. Due to the lack of a decent hill it was likely to be a bunchsprint at the end so my plan was just to sit in and conserve my energy forthe sprint. The previous year I had sprinted off too early and found myself rolling in at the back of the race so I really wanted to make sure I didn’t repeat that.

A decent group of around 8 riders had managed to get a small gap between us and them and as we came round for the last climb up Claire Hill I thought if they managed to get up there they will probably make it to the finish line. I tried to catch them on the road up towards Claire Hill and managed to drag the rest of the race with me, I really struggled up the hill after this and this took a lot out of me. I left my sprint as late as I could but I was in the wrong place at the wrong time and was also stuffed from my earlier efforts so I rolled in just behind the bunch in 61st. Whoops.

More Results from the weekend

Melissa Arkinstall (recently of Team GB) was achieved 1st Lady at the Hillingdon duathlon on Monday 23rd.

On the following Saturday she finished 10th in her age group in the British National Champs at Ashbourne. It was a tough course with 900 feet of climbing on the run and 2,000ft on the bike however she managed to improve her time by over 11 minutes from the same course last year.

Plenty of room on the blog for moreresults, just email Miles at willesdencyclingclub@yahoo.co.uk with your achievements, struggles and stories.

Glad’s Tidings – 30th April 07

The fine weather has stirred some of our road racers into action. On Wednesday night at Hillingdon in the VeteransLeague RC event Tony Woodford finished in 2nd place in his age group and Chris James 3rd in his section.

On Saturday Ed Packard in the BUSA 10 at Oxford recorded 25.02. Meanwhile, Adam Pawlikowski , riding in his first time trial at Leighton Buzzard in the Norlond Combine 10, finished in 25.59 and Ron Purdy recorded 30.00. Adam then went over to Hertford on Sunday to ride the Southgate C.C. 10 and recorded 25.59 again (You could say he is consistant!)

Brian Moon travelled to Aldermarston to ride in the Newbury R.C. 25 and returned a time of 1.08.58.

In case you are wondering what Gill has been doing- she had a cold last week and this weekend she went off to Majorica for a week taking her bike, of course.

All For now,
Cheers Gladys

The Bluebell Ride – 100km Audax

Last Sunday’s Bluebell 100km Audax turned out to be a real crowd puller. The prospect of a sunny day plus the best bluebells to be seen in many years seemed to be the draw. We were not disappointed. It was an excellent ride with swathes of bluebells on display in all the woods between Ruislip and the turn at Wendover. On hand at the World’s End Garden Centre were Ian and Pauline Why who had a busy day processing all the brevet cards and scraps of paper being used as make shift brevet cards.

The route was pretty much the same in previous years except that the leg busting climb opposite the Deep Mill dinner was replaced by a more gentle climb up Chalk lane. Old “favourites” like Stoney Lane and the climb up to Harefield were retained to test riders in the last 20km of the ride.

A garden party atmosphere greeted the riders on their return to Ruilip Manor. Tables and chairs were arranged under the shade of trees, with plenty of restorative food on offer for the hungry hoardes.

A great day out and thank you to Liz Creese and Rocco for organising it.

Ed Packard posts another PB.

Ed’s excellent racing form continues as achieves another personal best this weekend. Here’ is Ed’s round up of his racing, plus his adventures with the great british railway system.

Two brave Willesden lieutenants headed out into military country today (Saturday) to contest the Andover Wheelers middlemarkers 10 mile TT, on the notoriously fast P613 course.
Owing to lack of direct rail connections owing to track maintenance, I ended up having my careful mental preparations shattered by a 4 hour slog, involving a brief visit to Southampton and 3 different trains. Nonetheless, upon arrival at HQ the sun was shining, the tea was flowing, and some kids were playing cricket on the adjacent field. Railway engineering works and the sound of leather on willow? Truly the English summer has begun.
Ed Packard (me) ended up with a 23:04, a new personal best by some 45 seconds, although I wish I’d put in 5 seconds more effort! I’d never done the course before, and next time I’ll know what to do, and perhaps next time the conditions will be more ‘still’ (there was an irritating breeze blowing all afternoon, though I didn’t really notice it while racing).
I was all the more pleased as on Wednesday, at the Hillingdon Circuit 10, I’d only managed a 25:32 (a couple of other Willesden riders were in attendance, but I failed to note their times). Meanwhile, last Saturday, I did the 50km Antelope 3-up TTT as a team of two (the third member had flu) in 1:18:21 – I was racing for my university (albeit in Willesden colours) and my teammate had never raced before, so I was pleased with our performance. No placing, owing to our lack of third person, but we’d have finished in a respectable position even with our 2-up time!
Brian Moon recorded 27:09, and, when I caught up with him in the cake queue, he did not seem very happy. However, his sadistic agenda of 300km Audaxes one week, 10 mile time trials the next is surely to be admired.

PBP 2007 – Route

Someone has created a highly detailed route map of the this years PBP on Google maps. All the features along the way are loving recorded, along with all the controlsAfter.

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=http://cycling.ahands.org/pbp2007/PBP.kml&t=h

You can spend hours fiddling with all the buttons and sliders in Google to get just the route sheet you want. As the route itself is very easy to follow and is well signposted, you may better off spending the time out riding your bike. After all, it all starts 4 months today!!

PBP Support Team – Now recruiting!

The Willesden have an enviable reputation for the support we provide to our riders on the Paris-Brest. In 2003 we had a marvellous team of Jim, Wendy, Jan, Diane, Vyv, Akiko and John Brooking. As if by magic they appeared at most of the controls along the 1200km route to provide the riders with food, water and a place to sleep.

This year Wendy, Akiko and possibly Jim will be riding the event having been bitten by the bug in 2003. Diane, John B. and Jan are calling it a day after supporting numerous PBPs in the past.

Several people have committed to providing support for 2007 event, but we need more to provide effective support to the Willesden team. So if you would like a ring side (or road side) seat for this amazing event, then this will be your last chance for four years.

The event runs from 20th to 24th August 2007, but you should reckon on being be away from 18th to 27th August. Your costs will be covered, but you should feel comfortable with camping and dealing with any weather the event throws at us.

If you would like to know more about providing PBP support to the Willesden riders then please contact me at willesdencyclingclub@yahoo.co.uk.

News from Holland – Ivo’s first Audax

Yesterday was the first brevet I’ve ever organised.
A 200km BRM going in a big loop around the German town of Aachen. Participation was a bit small, with only 29 riders. But those that came were a good mix of experienced randonneurs and newbies.
With the start right at the border I had an international crowd, Dutch, German and Belgian randonneurs. All of them very satisfied afterwards. The only incident was Mario being caught by an opening cardoor. He limped to a railroad station with a sprained ankle. The cardriver admitted guilt on an official insurance paper so official matters will be settled without problem.
The fastest riders were back after 8h30, being slowed down considerably by their speed. The last group was back after 11h55, treating it as a very touristic outing. Some photo’s are available at http://fotoalbum.dds.nl/ivo_m/150407My next rides are at 22.4 (300km), 5.5 (400km) and 27.5 (600km)

Ivo

Well done Ivo, it can’t be easier producing route sheets in three languages.

Glad’s Tidings – Easter round up

Ed Packard started the Easter weekend in fine form. He recorded a personal best of 23.49 in the High Wycombe 10 mile event at Maidenhead on Good Friday. Also riding were Richard Jerome 25.56, Suss Patel 26.23, Gill Reynolds 26.51, Ron Purdy 32.04 and Cathy Ostler, riding in her first time trial, 32.07.

There were prizes of Easter eggs for those whose number were drawn out at random from the start list. Ron Purdy took the 1st Easter egg prize and Gill as a change from being the fastest lady won the 2nd Easter egg.

On Saturday, Ed travelled down to Essex to ride in the E.C.C.A. 10 and recorded 24.36.
Sunday morning saw him on the Amersham Road to ride the West London Combine 25 mile event. He found the weather to his liking and again rode a personal best of 1.03.33 to take the club’s 1st handicap award. Richard Jerome finished in 1.09.30, Jayne Paine, enjoying her first event of the season, 1.10.38 and Chris James 1.13.40.

Attached is a photo of Ed. Packard and also one of Gill receiving her Easter egg!

Meanwhile 22 members were riding in an Audax 300 Km which started in Ruislip at 6am, however the event does not finish untill 2am Sunday morning. So full results later

Ed’s Easter time trial frenzy

Rather than traditional Easter weekend pursuits, such as going to the garden centre or DIY store, the Squadra Verde was out in force in order to prove their collective worth in the ‘race of truth’.

First up, a sunny morning in Knowl Hill for the High Wycombe Lesley Cole memorial 10. The course was slightly adjusted in order to prevent a chaotic intersection of runners/cyclists, which by my judgement made it a bit quicker.

The Willesden riders performed thus:
Richard Jerome 25:26
Ronald Purdy 32:04
Edward Packard 23:49 PB
Suzz Patel 26:23
Catherine Ostler 32:07
Gill Reynolds 26:51

I headed up to Cambridge on the Saturday to test my mettle at the ECCA 10, held on the testing E3/10 course near Bottisham. I’d never gone under 26 minutes on this before, but managed a 24:36.

To celebrate Easter Sunday, a brave quartet of Willesden riders headed out to the A413 for the latest instalment of the West London Combine series. It was sunny, chilly, and thankfully the gale force winds that marred the last event were absent.
Jayne Payne: 1:10:38
Chris James: 1:13:40
Ed Packard: 1:03:33 PB
Richard Jerome1:09:30

Jayne selflessly lost a few seconds through her insistence on waving at every competitor she spotted. Easter Sunday drivers also proved a problem for Chris and myself. The lorry driver who slowed me up on the Chalfont double roundabout surely must’ve heard my expletive-laden rant, given I repeated it enough at high volume.

Brass Monkey – Photos

Tim Wainwright’s popular Brass Monkey 100km Audax ride took place last month. As well as organising and running the event, Tim was also out on the route taking photos of all the riders.

The full set of photos, including several Willesden riders can be found on http://www.cig.canon-europe.com/a?i=konBYQFKw0 (Click on “View Album”).

Tim must have a high tech camera with an amazingly fast shutter speed as he managed to get one picture of Mooney smiling!

Go-Ride Scheme – Update

Ian Why has emailed the Blog to say that the Willesden have completed their application to become a go-ride club. The application form was a laborious and time consuming document to complete, but thanks to Ian this is now done.

Go-Ride is a programme of cycling activities give under-18s the chance to experience the action and excitement of cycle sport. Run through British Cycling’s national network of Go-Ride cycling clubs, accredited clubs aim to be safe, effective and child-friendly. They will use traffic-free facilities, such as school playing fields and playgrounds and have trained coaches that introduce young riders to a range of cycling disciplines, such as Mountain Biking, BMX and Track Riding.

Last Turbo in Wembley

Last night saw the final turbo session of the winter season at Wembley.

Ray Kelly has been a creative and inspirational coach, painting a different cycling scenario each week. It has been hours of fun, though most of the minutes were extraordinarily painful.

Thank you Ray, 9:20pm on a Tuesday night will never be the same again!

Simon makes significant progress

Simon Doughty has over the last few weeks defied medical prognosis andachieved a level of progress which has gone way beyond anything previously expected.

The major improvement has seen Simon unexpectedly regain the ability to speak and communicate in very simple 3 or 4 word sentences. His memory is very poor and inconsistent and he does not speak complex thoughts or phrases. He does however give responses to straightforward questions such as ‘Would you like a cup of tea?’.

He appears alert and seems to follow basic conversations. He has demonstrated an understanding of simple humour. There is a very strong likelihood that he will show substantial improvement over the coming weeks/months, though is impossible to predict at this early stage what overall level of recovery he will achieve.

Physically, he has significant muscle wastage (his girth has increased and he appears to have stick thin arms and legs) which includes his vocal muscles. Consequently, his physiotherapy has been increased and he is relearning skills such as the use of a knife and fork or the ability to hold a cup, all of which are tiring, especially as he hasn’t used his limbs/hands much duringthe last 5 months. He is having to completely relearn coordination and spatial skills. Again, it is expected that there will be significantimprovement in these over the coming weeks.

Visiting Simon now is a very different experience. Please continue tovisit, BUT please ring the ward first as Simon is now having more therapy and is often off the ward in the afternoons midweek. Ring the ward before youvisitto make sure he is there.

Visiting is 14:00 – 20:00 daily. Ward 4 Osbourn (0114) 271 5976

Glad’s Tiding – 02 April 07

One of our newest members seems to be riding events at weekends whilst others are still trying to shake of the effects of the social season or recent colds.

Ed Packard rode in the Middlesex Road 10 mile time trial at Aldermarston on Saturday and recorded a 24.38 in spite of the punishing headwind. He was joined by Brian Moon who finished in 28.30. On Sunday he rode in the Colchester Rovers 25 and returned in 1.6.57.

Meanwhile the older section of the club met at Aylesford for their annual luncheon. This year Prof. Ken Howard R.A. and his wife Dora were able to attend together with members from Chester, Calne,St. Albans and eight of the club’s life members from the London area.

Sadly, Ben Eley(aged 93),one of the club’s oldest members, who regularly attended the luncheon and still continued with aerobic classes until a month, ago died last week. His contribution to the club’s activities will be sorely missed.

Hope to have good weather for the Easter weekend and that our riders come out to see the Easter Bunny and don’t eat too many Easter Eggs.

Gladys Purdy
