International Event
Meanwhile, I will be travelling to the Netherlands for the weekend to ride the 40.8km Tijdstrijders Cup TT near Almere. It is one of a series of Dutch TTs throughout the season, so I shall be interested to see how it goes.

Westerley 10s at Hillingdon
If you want to try time trialling away from traffic the Westerley CC are offering just that. Starting from 14th April they are promoting 10-mile time trials at Hillingdon Cycle Circuit.

Events are scheduled for 28 April, 12 May, 26 May, 9 June, 23 June, 7 July, 21 July, 4 August and 18 August.

An innovation is the use of transponders which will have the benefit of keeping track of laps covered on the 0.94-mile circuit.

The time trials will start at 7.15pm with an entry fee of £5 plus a returnable £10 deposit for the use of a transponder.

Further details are available from the Westerley’s Roger Wolsey, telephone 020 578 5594 or e-mail: roger@wolseyofacton.co.uk.

Wendy, Lynn and Mark completed their third monthly 200km ride, which puts them well on the way to achieving their Randonnee Through the Year Award. Mark’s report follows ….

Miles Back

RTYRA Round 3 – Boudicca’s Revenge

Various factors dictated that round 3 would have to be a Sunday Permanent ride. So three of Willesden’s finest Pioneers (Lynn, Mark & Wendy) elected to ride Tom Deakins other Perm titled ‘Boudicca’s Revenge’ – the reasons for this title became clear as the ride unfolded. The route had never been ridden in one hit so the event creator volunteered to join us for what was effectively the inaugural ride.

The highpoint of the weekend was the pre-event pasta party the night before: a huge overdose of pasta followed by an extremely naughty chocolate mousse and a fine cheeseboard to fill up the corners. Jim left Wendy with us for the night and headed home.

Before we knew it it was time for a huge steaming bowl of porridge followed by toast before setting off into the gloom of the early morning. The car windscreen froze up by the time we got to the end of my road!

When we made it to the Start at Great Dunmow the temperature had dropped to minus 5 degrees. Tom led us out on an alternative route to avoid some of the first wet laney wanderings as they would have frozen overnight – the B road alternative was used until the temperature had a chance to rise above freezing.

The day was dry & bright with a rising NNE to niggle at us for the remainder of the day. Conditions were far too favourable – something we had not had much experience of so far this year. i.e. no snow or rain or sleet, but it still had a pretty good kick in

Tom Wendy and Lynn enjoying the sunshine

The first control with facilities was reached by an icy ford at Sutton – where a chap with a posh camera trying for an atmospheric shot came a cropper on the icy edges.

Pretty but icy!

We had a round of cheese toasties in the little café that was once a stationers in Potton Market square. The girl in charge was willing to dash over the road to get us some beans to go with some toast – but we decided to stick to the menu.

Excellent Potton Market Cafe

The next leg to Chatteris was fairly featureless, no wonder Boudicca revolted, she needed something to break the horizon! Diversions on the A14 funneled a lot of traffic onto what is usually a quiet route. It was very pleasant crossing the many arched bridge in St Ives with the chapel in the middle in bright sunshine – which was followed by a long featureless fenland crossing to the haven of the

Green Welly Transport Café at the halfway point, perhaps Boudicca wouldn’t have revolted if she’d known about this place, this was the turning point and progress was a little easier with a bit of wind assistance.

At the next turn there was a warning about a flooded road which was on the route. At last something to make the ride memorable! When we got to the flood it was gone !!!!

Next check was the A14 services near Boxworth for coffee and stickies. A bit pricey after the delights of the Green Welly but needs must. The last leg was the longest and also the hardest. I went off the front to set up a picnic. The route took us over what must have been the steepest hill in Cambridgeshire – a bit gratuitous but at least it was quiet.

The team regrouped in the bus shelter at fowlmere- our picnic site – worryingly Lynn refused a ‘Scary’ Bakewell tart. It was now properly dark with about 30km of mainly lanes to contend with.

We grimped/walked up the ‘revenge’ section on the Icknield Way and had a slow descent along frost damaged lane. I was using a new Edelux front light for the first time – a dynamo powered LED light with an awesome output. Positioned in the middle of the road I was able to illuminate the worst of the potholes on the rough descents. It was a welcome relief to get on a B road with a better surface as we skirted round Saffron Walden. Then with 20km to go the route took us the pretty way to Thaxted with a few more climbs thrown in to finish us off.

The smells from a curry emporium in Debden were most tempting.

Lynn and Tom admire the view

I waited with Tom in Thaxted for Lynn & Wendy -we had already covered well over 200km in the time limit. Now came the kick, the temperature dropped this combined with the last few climbs led Lynn to a new experience – a severe attack of the bonk with all of the dizziness that goes with it. She was cold & had had enough. Wendy fed her chewy bars then continued the ride with Tom towards the finish. After installing Lynn in the warmth of the Swan Hotel with the bike secured outside I made a dash for the Arrivee and the car and made a hasty departure to pick up Lynn – it was now -3 degrees – no wonder she was so cold!

Lynn Re-fuels

Wendy Re-fuels also.

218km covered – if you want to experience this ride in the summer it is on the calendar as the Flitch bikes 204km on Saturday June 5th. The route will be the same, but hopefully it will be warmer!

Next installment – The Dorset coast 200

Jayne Wins!

Jayne Paine reports:

I’m just back from the Portsmouth Easter Circuits circuit race – which I WON! My first ever road bike win!

There were only seven of us, so we were racing with the 3rd Cat men, which changes the tactics completely.

In the afternoon there was a track omnium, in which I cam 3rd! ( out of 3!) . Still I got my entrance money back!

Well done, Jayne – top ride.

Yoho Bike Hotel

Vyvien Baker has found this unusual hotel in Kenting, Taiwan. Based at the South end of the island that manufactures most of the world’s bicycles, the Yoho bike Hotel is a little different.

You can ride straight in to Reception and sign in with out getting out of the saddle. Further more you can ride into the lift to take you to your room. Each room is kitted out with bike hangers on the wall, so you do not have to leave your pride and joy. A “bike spa” is available to wash your bike together with an on-site mechanic and bike shop.

Happy Easter to every one.

Easter weekend TT results – updated

Please let me know if you have any TT results over Easter (lance (at) lancewoodman.co.uk).

Three Willesden riders braved the rain to ride the High Wycombe ’10’ at Kingston Bagpuize on Good Friday and were rewarded with a gap in the showers while the event ran. Despite the cold and windy conditions Peter Dixon rode to another personal best with 23:43 and 29th place. I battered round to a 27:06 and Peter Cookson did a 28:00. The winner was Richard Prebble (Motorpoint Marshalls Pasta RT) with 21:23.

The prize giving was enlivened with some raffle prizes and Peter D came away with a Smarties Easter Egg (left) and I won a pack of SIS energy products. With last week’s vets team medals the prizes are beginning to add up.

On Easter Monday I travelled to Weobley for the Hereford and Dist Whs ’25’. It was a tough day on a tough course and I recorded a 1:12:52. Enough said. The winner was D Robson (Somerset RC) with a 57:57.

TT News – 27/28 March *UPDATED*

These are the results I have so far for this week’s time trialling. If you have any more, please let me know either by email (lance (at) lancewoodman.co.uk) or by using the comment facility here.

Saturday: Ian Piper writes: “After seven years of no racing I got talked into riding the Minehead CC Hardriders 26 Mile TT as I have been putting in a few miles in preparation for a weeks cycling in Mallorca in April. The end result was better than anticipated. The winner was Andy Winterbottom (Somerset RC/Bike Chain) with 1:13:56. My time was 1:20:31 which gave me 5th overall, 3rd vet on actual and it would have been 3rd vet on standard if there had been a standard category.”

“The time looks very very slow to say the least but when they say Hardriders around here they mean it. The course was 2 laps of a 13 mile circuit with a 1 in 8 climb followed by a 2 mile drag, a long twisty descent and then a 4 mile climb which finished as 1 in 10 at the top and a few ups and downs to join the major hills together. To put the course into perspective the first two riders who did a 1:13:56 and a 1:15:04 did a 52 and 53 minute 25 miles TT times last year respectively.”

Meanwhile Simon Wicks and I drove down to beautiful Bentley to try out the H10/8 course in a Farnham RC 10 mile club event. On a dry and fairly still day 27 solo riders and a tandem finished with Xavier Disley (…a3crg) fastest on a 22:06. Simon continued his barnstorming season with a personal best of 24:27 to take 7th place. I settled for a more modest 26:31 and 14th.

Sunday: It was a cool morning at gorgeous Great Missenden for the VTTA (London and Home Counties) ’10’. Malcolm Woolsey (Westerley CC) was fastest on the day with a 23:10. Peter Cookson opened his season’s account with a 27:36 (+1:58 on vets standard). Chris James backed Peter up with a 28:53 (+1:37) to help win the two person team prize on standard. Congratulation, guys. I came home with a 27:14 (+0:32). 22 riders finished.

West London Combine event #3. Entries please.

The third West London Combine event of the year is the High Wycombe run 25 mile time trial on Sunday 11th April. The first rider off will be at 7.30am.

The headquarters for the event is The Memorial Hall at Great Missenden (see here). Toilets, car parking and refreshments are available. The start is fairly close by. The course (HCC114) description is here.

The closing date for entries is 30th March. If you’d like to ride, please let me have your entries before then.

** UPDATE ** I have entries from Richard Jerome, Rich Cooper, John Williams, Chris James, Simon Wicks, Peter Dixon and Brian Moon.

The entry fee is £2. This is collected at the end of the season – do not send any money yet!

To enter you for the event (and the associated Willesden CC competitions) we need your name and your best time for a 25m TT for the current and past three seasons (i.e. your best since 1st January 2007). If you don’t have a time for 25, let me have your 10m TT best since 1/1/07. If you don’t have any times at all, don’t worry, it just helps us to place the field and set times for handicap awards.

If you’re a veteran (40 or over) or a juvenile or junior (12-17 inclusive) then it would be useful to have your date of birth.

If you want to enter, or have any questions, please do get in touch.

Cheers,

Lance Woodman (TT secretary)

West London Combine event #2. Results

The 2nd West London Combine event was a 25m TT on the Amersham Road course (HCC113). Saturday had been a meeuch day but Sunday was warm, relatively windless and sunny. Almost a float day for this course.

Ron Purdy’s team photo (right): L-R, Brian ‘Sick Note’ Moon, Peter ‘The Hat’ Dixon, Lance ‘Book and Biro’ Woodman and Simon ‘Knees’ Wicks.

Willesden had a six riders on the start line (Brian Moon was excused boots). The fastest rider on the day was Steve Golla (High Wycombe CC) with a 58:33, but fastest WCC man, Peter Dixon, was up there in the top echelon again with his 1:1:14. Simon Wicks knocked nearly three minutes off his PB to run away with the handicap award. It was good to see TT debutant John Williams out there dispelling the rumour that the road team are too scared to test. Stuart was disappointed to go back nearly a minute on last year’s time, but this was as nothing to the despair that I felt with my three minute reversal on my 2008 time. Russell turned in a very neat 1:6 for second on handicap (** UPDATE ** The official result has Russell with a 1:4:16) – I’m sorry I missed you after the event, Russell.

The full result will appear here soon, but in the mean time, here are the green headlines…

Pos. Name Time H/cap H/cap
time
H/cap
pos.
1 Peter Dixon 1:1:14 Scr 1:1:14 3
2 Simon Wicks 1:3:37 7:00 56:37 1
3 Stuart Birnie 1:4:01 2:30 1:1:31 4

5 Lance Woodman 1:9:25 1:00 1:8:25 5
6 John Williams 1:11:34 None

Stuart’s report is here, Simon will wax lyrical here, and look out for my excuses when I can think of them here.

A big thank you to Ron and Gladys who turned up to marshall the Amersham roundabout and to Brian who showed up to be photographed.

URGENT – Marshalls needed for Sunday

Hi Folks,

I’ve messed up and I need your help. I am looking for three marshalls for Sunday’s West London Combine 25m TT on Sunday. The three positions in question are…

  1. Roundabout at the Southern end of the Amersham by-pass. Outgoing riders sent left (first exit) direction A413, Great  Missenden. Returning riders sent right (third exit) direction A413, Chalfonts.
  2. Two roundabouts further on. Outgoing riders sent right (2nd exit) direction A413, Great Missenden. Returning riders sent left (first exit) direction A413, Chalfonts.
  3. Roundabout at Northern end of the Amersham by-pass. Outgoing riders sent straight on (2nd exit) direction A413, Great Missenden. Returning riders sent straight on (2nd exit) direction A413, Chalfonts.

The map has all three points if you move around it.

The first rider is off at 8.01am. Numbers (and, I assume, marshalling vests etc.) will be handed out at the start area – the lay-by underneath the M25 bridge crossing the A413…

Weekend Round up 13-14 March 2010

Warmer weather this weekend and riders are now getting ready for the season ahead. The Spring Chicken Road Race organised by the Hemel Hempstead C.C. at Chardon in Buckinghamshire on Saturday saw the Squadra Verde in action. Richard Jerome was placed 27th in a tightly bunched sprint for the line. Peter Dixon was unfortunate to puncture on the penultimate lap but continued and was placed 63rd whilst Rich Cooper was unable to keep up with the main bunch and retired on the penultimate lap.

Chris James traveled to Aldermarston to ride in the Middlesex R.C. 10 mile time trial only to find that roadworks meant that the course was shortened to 8 miles. He finished the distance in 22.53.

Saturday was also the last event in the Go Ride series at Hillingdon Cycle Circuit which the Willesden C.C. have been running. Over 30 novice riders took part ranging from age 5 to 16. Medals were awarded and riders received a bell and a bottle. The kids had a great time but for us helpers it was freezing cold and windy but rewarding to see their faces when they won a medal. The event was organised by Ray Kelly who was celebrating his 65th birthday and his retirement from working for British Cycling.

All for now,

Cheers Gladys
