Cycling play at the Packet Boat Marina, Hayes

Gosh, a cycling play right on the door step of our beloved circuit at Hillingdon.
For one night only , Friday 18th June 2010, there will be a play about cycling.
The blurb on the company’s web site says….

“This pacy, poignant production celebrates cycling and its unusual partnership with socialism. Mikron’s talented team of four freewheelers, pedals its way through 100 years of history, charting the amazing story of the socialist cyclists of the National Clarion Cycling Club and the last day of business in a 21st century Manchester cycle shop. These two tales are interwoven with laughter, tomfoolery, rousing songs and sheer Pedal Power.”

It all starts at 7:30pm on the 18th June at the
Packet Boat Marina,
Packet Boat Lane,
Cowley
Uxbridge
UB8 2JJ

Web site is http://www.mikron.org.uk/pedalBlurb.php

Tickets £10 (£8 Concs) – you are advised to bring a chair or a blanket.

Thanks to Ray Kelly for spotting this.

TT mid-week update

Ian Piper writes:

I [ rode] a midweek 2 up 10 and rode with one of the people I train with. The event was the Weston Wheelers 2 up 10 mile TT on the U21/10 on the 26 May, Ian Hutchins (Somerset Road Club – Bicycle Chain) and I did a 22.44 which was good enough for second place behind M. Ashurst and T Lewis – Somerset Road Club – Bicycle Chain. I would like to say I was doing my fair share of the work but Ian was doing much longer and harder turns on the front than me but even so I was very pleased with the result as this was my first 10 in 7 years. It is probably the flattest and fairest 10 course I have ever ridden with the start and finish exactly opposite each other, next to no traffic and with the exception of the bridge over the M5 it was absolutely flat but then I should have expected that on the Somerset levels!

Meanwhile the vets were in action again. Gladys reports:

In the sweltering heat yesterday afternoon the London Vets held a 10 mile time trial on the Fifield course. It was touch and go as the workmen were filling in holes in Drift Road ready for the Windsor Triathlon. Gill Reynolds and Pete Cookson took the team award with a combined plus of 10:17. Pete was 3rd fastest Vet in 24:07, Gill finished in 27:10, Brian Moon 29:20 and Ron Purdy 33:37.

Tom in the points

Tom London (how come he gets his surname on the back of his shorts?) scored points in Tuesday night’s circuit race at Hillingdon. He was 7th in the fourth cat race behind winner Rubin Parker of the East Grinstead CC. I was a DNF in the same race.

Well done, Tom.

Specialized aero helmets

Just to let you all know I still have the 4 club Specialized aero helmets if any one wishes to use them for TT or track please let me know as it seems such a waste to have them just sitting around.

A bit of TT fun

We’ve had four West London Combine events so far and there are another four to go. Here are a couple of tables showing who’s the most consistent performer on actual and handicap positions. A win gets you 30 points, 2nd 29 and so on. It’s just a bit of fun – the sort of thing a TT Sec. does on a Bank Holiday Monday.

Fastest time

Rider #1:
10m
#2:
25m
#3:
25m
#4:
25m
Rides Points Rank
Peter Dixon 30 30 30 30 4 120 1
Simon Wicks 29 29 28 3 86 2
Stuart Birnie 28 28 29 3 85 3
Lance Woodman 27 26 26 3 79 4
Chris James 25 29 24 3 78 5
John Williams 25 25 2 50 6
Russell O’Malley 27 1 27 7=
Richard Jerome 27 1 27 7=
Jayne Paine 26 1 26 9
Brian Moon 23 1 23 10
Harmeet Dhiraj 22 1 22 11

Handicap time

Rider #1:
10m
#2:
25m
#3:

#4:

Rides Points Rank
Peter Dixon 30 28 30 29 4 117 1
Simon Wicks 28 30 28 3 86 2
Stuart Birnie 27 27 27 3 81 3
Chris James 25 29 24 3 78 4=
Lance Woodman 26 26 26 3 78 4=
John Williams 25 30 2 55 6
Jayne Paine 29 1 29 7=
Russell O’Malley 29 1 29 7=
Richard Jerome 25 1 25 9
Brian Moon 23 1 23 10
Harmeet Dhiraj 22 1 22 11

So Peter, Simon and Stuart are dominating the podium places at the moment, but there are a few close battles further down the order. Will we see a late season charge from Brian in the handicap stakes? Will Rich Cooper, Ray Kelly and Tom London finally make their season debuts and shake up the top order?

Don’t be left out – make sure you get your entries in for the remaining events. The next one is the ’50’ on the new, super (a bit) fast(er) Great Missenden course on 27th June. If you’re not riding, the Combine is always on the look out for marshals and helpers. Please let me know if you’re willing to assist.

A win in West London Combine event #4 and other results. UPDATED

This was a 25 mile event on the HCC114 Great Missenden course. It was a cool and breezy day offering a brisk finish.

Peter Dixon was the star of the show with a new personal best time of 58:02 to win the whole event. The altitude training is paying off (he’s using the turbo in the loft).

John Williams, on a road bike, also recorded a PB of 1:9:32 win the club medal for fastest on handicap. The Jim Revill Trophy will go to Peter because John has not ridden the requisite two qualifying events. Peter will also get a medal for fastest rider and 2nd handicap. He’ll have to extend his trophy cabinet.

Stuart Birnie took the honours in the season long battle between him and Simon Wicks – both with course PBs I think. Stuart wins a club medal for 2nd fastest. Richie ‘Road Man’ Jerome found the scratch man tag a little heavy to bear and came back with a 1:5:40 – 5 seconds ahead of me on my full TT rig (blog).

Jumbo and Moony found the going tough but not, I suspect, as tough as Harmeet did riding her first race. Well done, Harmeet.

On Wednesday Gill Reynolds rode the CCBreckland ’10’ and recorded a 25:24. The event was won by G Rushmore (King’s Lynn CC) in 21:59.

If you missed it, there also a blog entry about Jayne Paine, Tony Flynn and Tim BurrowsWednesday night TT escapades at the Hillingdon Circuit.

Brian, Peter Dixon, Peter Cookson and I were entered for the Team Velo Sportif ’10’ on Saturday, but the event was cancelled because of dangerous conditions. Gill Reynolds‘ Saturday event was also cancelled, but today she rode the Spirit ’10’ at Milton Keynes in 26:22 to take the fastest lady award as well as 3rd vet’s prize on standard.

I’ll update this entry with any other results that come in.

Coming Up
Saturday 19th June has a Farnborough and Camberley ’10’ on the H10/8 (Bentley). I’m heading West to ride the Cwmcarn Paragon RC ’25’ on the R25/7 (if I get in. And – no – it’s not THAT Welsh course).

Sunday 20th June sees the Farnham RC ’25’ on the H25/8 (Bentley).

Bike POLO and BBQ: FIX THE DATE IN YOUR DIARY – 30th JUNE

Bicycle polo is completely crazy and not to be missed!  Hope to see you there!

More players wanted!  …. and who will be playing from the Willesden this year? (we can loan you a couple of players if you need!).

This year we hope to get a full team again from the Westerley and the Willesden (3 or 4 members in a team). This is now an annual competition and this year will be the first in a prestigious challenge between our two clubs.

Who will be the winner of the 2010 polo match? The Westerley or the Willesden?

Get out your old hack bike (mountain bike or otherwise) and come and join us. Crazy girl Jayne even managed to play on a track bike a couple of years ago, as I recall.
Almost as much fun: come and watch the spectacle and just enjoy the barbecue. Big laughs guaranteed!

Don’t forget the date: 30th June, at the clubroom, 8:30pm.

If anyone would like to set up the BBQ or help cook, I’d be grateful of offers of help, please.

If you’ve not been down before, check out the map on the link below and we’d love to see you!

cheers, Roly

Calling all London Cyclists

London cyclists are invited to have a free vision test this Wednesday 2 June at 8.30am to celebrate the launch of the Eye Cycle Safe campaign. Created by Transitions® adaptive lenses and the CTC, Eye Cycle Safe aims to encourage cyclists to take care of their eyes and wear the appropriate eyewear. The launch, which will be attended by national media, will take place at The Cockpit in London’s Hyde Park (please follow this link to find a map of Hyde Park) where cyclists can have their vision screened and take away a voucher for a free eye examination for them and their family.

A limited number of places are also available for cyclists to take on a charity challenge to cycle ‘home’, however far that may be. For every mile they ride, Transitions will donate £1 to the Childhood Eye Cancer Trust (capped at £100/100 miles). If you would like to take on the charity challenge, please email caroline@dsapr.co.uk.

For more information and updates on the campaign follow Eye Cycle Safe on Twitter (@EyeCycleSafe) or find us on Facebook under ‘Eye Cycle Safe’.

TT Report – mid-Week ’10’

Jayne Paine (AKA ‘Bunty’, AKA ‘Simon’s Byrd’) sends a report from the Westerley CC Wednesday night club ’10’ at Hillingdon (slightly edited to avoid accusations of libel, slander and bad taste). These are great events to start TT’ing. Jayne says:

Hillingdon 10.3 TT last Wed.

Had to do a 7 mile TT to get there on time!

I did 26:31

Tony Flynn – his first foray in 19 years – 26:30

Tim Burrows [preparing for Paris-Roubaix] – 29:46

Malcolm Woolsey (Westerley CC), all aero’d up to the max, could only manage a rather pathetic did a very respectable 23:50.

It was a bit blowy.

A couple of recumbants – one looking like a yellow bullet thing went whizzing round. But both were victims of mechanicals, or maniacals.

West London Combine event #4. Handicap details.

Sunday’s ’25’ has been nominated as the Jim Revill Trophy 2010 event. The trophy is decided on a rider’s handicap time. To qualify a rider has to have ridden two 25m TTs in recent years – I’m afraid that this means that Tom, John, Harmeet and Balneet don’t qualify for the trophy (but they do qualify for the overall and handicap medals).

Jim Revill Trophy handicaps were calculated by Jim Burgin of Hillingdon CC (many thanks, Jim). Gladys calculated the other four.

No. Name Start HCap
1 Lance Woodman 7.31 1:00
2 John Williams 7.32 12:00
3 Brian Moon 7.33 8:15
4 Peter Dixon 7.34 Scr
5 Stuart Birnie 7.35 1:10
6 Christopher James 7.36 5:45
7 Simon Wicks 7.37 1:30
8 Richard Jerome 7.38 Scr
9 Harmeet Dhiraj (W) 7.39 15:00
10 Balneet Dhiraj (W) 7.40 15:00
11 Tom London 7.41 4:00

By the way, we hear on the grapevine that John Williams is taking this event very seriously: he will be testing out some equipment developed in the infamous Kenton Secret Squirrel Club. We await the results with interest.

CC Ashwell Primavera 23/5

Richard Jerome defied hairy legs and hills to finish 9th in Sunday’s race in Bedfordshire.

70 riders started the race in hot conditions and it looked to be a a bunch sprint from the start as the racing was steady but not really fast.

The finish was an uphill sprint, Richard isn’t very good at hills but somehow hung on to 9th place. He was 4th place by the top of the first part of the climb but by now he’d blown up big time and it was just a case of hanging on as long as he good till the line.

TT reports – 22/23 May – Updated

Saturday
After months of whingeing about the cold I decided to whinge about the heat on Saturday. I rode the Farnham RC ’10’ on the H10/8 (Bentley) and recorded a 24:19. The winner was Ben Instone (Scientific-coaching.com) with a 20:08.

Gill Reynolds rode the Sotonia CC ’10’ on the P613 (Andover) course in 25:16. The winner was Pete Lawrence (VC 10) in 22:14.

Middlesex RC ’25’ on the H25/1 (Aldermaston): Pete Cookson 1:03:55, Brian Moon 1:10:36. Jumbo found a pothole after 8 miles and punctured.

Sunday
Gill and I both went looking for good times on the new U47B course at Cricklade. The morning start for the VTTA West ’10’ meant that the heat was less oppressive and the lack of a breeze meant a fast day. The course is very good – we both thought we’d ride it again. The legs, however, had been used up the day before and we only improved slightly: Gill with a 25:08 and me with a 24:12. The winner was Dean Robson (Somerset RC) with a 20:08.

Coming Up
Sunday 13th June has a couple of decent 50s on: The Reading CC event on the H50/1a and the Finsbury Park CC race on the F1/50 (I’m going for the latter).

On the same day there are also some 10.4 mile Richmond Park time trials being organised by the London Dynamo. The closing date is 30th May. There is more information here.

Paris-Roubaix Sportive

Club member Tim Burrows is riding the Paris-Roubaix Sportive and is looking for sponsorship for three worthy causes. His flyer reads:

L’Enfer du Nord – The Hell of the North

The Queen of the Classics

Paris-Roubaix, one of the oldest ‘Classic Races’ and regarded as the hardest. It’s known as the ‘Hell of the North’ because it traverses the terrain battered by The Great War of 1914 to 1918. From Compinierge in the suburbs of Paris to Roubaix just short of the Belgian border this is the race that captures the imagination. There are no notable climbs but at a total of 165 miles and with the final third including 36 miles of cobbled pavé dating back to Napoleonic times this is as tough as it gets. Many modern riders stay away from this race and all that it can throw at them and modern insurance will not even cover them.

Ok I won’t be doing the professional race and in June the weather is less likely to turn it into a slog across No Man’s Land, but I will be doing the same course, on the same cobbles, at the same distance, in the same variable weather on 6th June 2010.

This ride will be for ego and for the worthy causes as shown below.

The Hell of the North. Raising Funds For: Diabetes UK, White Lodge Centre and The National Association of Disabled Supporters

Is anyone else from the club riding this?

You can contact Tim at euwars@btinternet.com.

FFCT Semaine Federale

Is anyone is interested in joining the Willesden group going to Semaine Federale in Verdun this August?

The Semaine Federale is fabulous family friendly week of cycling, impeccably organised by the FFCT. Some 12,000 cyclists will be attending for eight days of organised rides and tours. Each day there are signposted routes varying in distance from 50 to 200kms, taking in the best that the region has to offer.

Each evening a full five course meal is laid on in a giant marquee that easily holds thousands of hungry cyclists at any one time. Despite the failing £, the weekend is remarkably good value.

Full details of the event can be found at http://sf2010-verdun.org/, though it will test your school French a little!

If you require further information then please contact me at

This will be updated as the carrier pigeons reach the club loft…

Saturday
Hounslow and District Wheelers 10m TT, H10/8, Bentley.

Gill Reynolds did a 25:46 in a superfast women’s section won by Julia Shaw (Utag Yamaha.com) in 21:19. I recorded a season’s best of 23:56 (blog here). The fastest male rider was Wouter Sybrandy (Sigma Sport) with a 20:05.

Sunday
High Wycombe CC 25m TT, H25/2, Marlow

Today was cooler. There was a light breeze and later starters were drizzled on. Stuart Birnie (blog here) was fastest of the WCC crowd with a PB of 1:00:04 to finish 32nd of the 89 finishers. Also PB’ing was Simon Wicks with a 1:00:38 (37th). I did a 1:02:17 (50th. Blog here) and Brian Moon did a 1:13:42 (84th). The winner was Rob Griffiths (www.athleteservices.com) in 54:42.
