January’s Monthly Meeting.

Happy New Year to you all. The meeting was postponed from the first Tuesday in the month as it was so close to New Year’s Day Parade in which several of our members took part. It has to be postponed again as Wembley Clubroom cannot be used.  Some mice chewed through the cables and caused a small fire. I am in touch with Junior Collins, who runs the Youth Club there and he will keep us informed as to when it may be possible to use it again.                                              Don’t worry I will be there next week to collect subs and money for dinner tickets.

2012 NewYears day Parade – Be a part of it

Once again the Willesden CC will be taking part in London’s New Years Day parade. The 2012 event will be the 26th Anniversary of the parade and in that short time it has become the world’s largest. More than half a million people are expected to line the two mile route that weaves past all the London landmarks. The event is televised around the world with the BBC, CNN, Fox news, SKY and CBS expected to cover the event. As a Willesden CC member you can be part of this fabulous day out and it is completely free.

The theme of this year’s event is the Olympic games. Ray Kelly is planning to organise fun style racing to keep the crowd and us entertained. So show off your best WCC kit and poshest bike for the day.

The Parade starts at 11.45am on Piccadilly at the junction with Berkeley Street outside the Ritz Hotel and finishes around 3pm at Parliament Street. However, come earlier for a cup of tea and a bit of food!

The Parade route is – Piccadilly, Piccadilly Circus, Lower Regent Street, Waterloo Place, Pall Mall, Cockspur Street, Trafalgar Square, Whitehall and Parliament Street. Our lead car (driven by Julie May) will be parked up after our route is complete on one of the side streets off Millbank for more refreshments, just follow the car!

More details of the whole parade can be found here: http://www.londonparade.co.uk/

If you need to know what date it is on then the clue is in the title!

Jayne still racing down under

On Saturday it was the 30th Clarence St Cyclery (it’s a bike shop) Cup, an all-day track fiesta at the Dunc Grey indoor velodrome in Sydney.

Full results — http://www.nsw.cycling.org.au/default.asp?Page=44828

There were various races throughout the day and night. The NSW State Keirin Championship took place too.My races started about 6pm with the ‘Warm Up Scratch Race for Mature Ladies’. It was 8 laps, so 2km. Well out of the six of us I knew one of the women, Joanne Troutman, a sprinter, so I decided to blast off fairly immediately. I held about 1/3rd to 1/2 a lap on them. As my lungs started to give out I kept having a look behind to see if they had given up. I blew with about 3 to go and was overhauled on the last lap. I was even beaten by the woman with one leg. Trouty won it. But we like her, so we didn’t mind…too much.

So that was my lungs buggered for the rest of the weekend’s racing.

The rest of my races were handicapped – they were qualifiers for the main event of the day, the Wheel Race.
I was handicapped in to group 1. All of the people in group 1 deserved to be there, except me. As I’d had some success here last year, and because I’m an ‘International Rider’ I think I was ranked a bit hard.
I didn’t qualify in the Group 1 scratch and went through to the repêchage which was group 1 and 2 . It was only 5 laps which doesn’t suit me at all. I was desperate to qualify and had to pull a bit of a stunt in the final sprint; I was a bit blocked in and had to nip underneath. I may have wandered inadvertently on to the Cote d’Azur and fully expected to be hauled in front of the rozzers, but one of the girls managed to create a bit of a diversion by screaming, so it was all OK.

The Wheel Race: the riders start at various points around the track according to their handicap. The person considered the best will start off ‘on scratch’ ie on the start line, and the least strong rider might well be almost a lap up from the start, and these races aren’t that long – 8 laps ours was.

I was on 40m with only 3 riders behind me. One of those was my old mate (I think she’s 15) Holly Heffernan, a multiple junior champion.
When the whistle went it wasn’t long before the girls behind me came whipping over me. I got on Holly’s tail for a millisecond before she managed to wriggle through a cozy bit of bunching. I went the scenic route and took in the view from the top.
Holly came 2nd and I came 9th, which I wasn’t displeased with.

The next day, Sunday, it was a straight back to the Dunc Grey for the Elite NSW State Omnium Championships. I was both nervous and knackered – good for weight loss, not for much else.
There were 6 races-
Flying 250m ——————–4th
Points – 40 laps——————5th
Elimination————————2nd
Pursuit – 2km———————4th
Scratch -5km (20 laps)———3rd
500m TT————————–4th

Full results – http://www.nsw.cycling.org.au/default.asp?Page=44832

Fortunately a few people didn’t show up. Unfortunately, the ones that did were shit hot.
There were 7 of us, 4 of whom were our equivalent of ODP. It was a bugger because they all had the same kit on.

I wasn’t doing too well until the Devil, despite doing some pretty random things in the points race when, much to my surprise I managed to get 2nd which shot me up the points tally in to 3rd place. After the scratch race there were three of us all lying joint 2nd with only the 500m TT to go. I did 41s something or other, which was a bit disappointing because I felt like I’d done the ride of my life .Probably the drag caused by my left eye dangling from its optic nerve. One of my rivals had an absolutely rotten start and posted an even worse time than me so I managed to get my little green Willesden arse on the podium, just.

Anyway, we all had a great day and I got a bronze medal and a reputation of being a bit dangerous. Grrrr!!!!

Pickwick Bicycle Club

“The oldest club in existence is the Pickwick Bicycle Club, formed in June, 1870. It took its name from the work of Charles Dickens, and for some reason now forgotten the members each chose nom de guerre from the pages of the Pickwick Papers”.

The Willesden CC has two Pickwickian cyclists, “Mr Mallard” (Ray Kelly) and “Thomas” (Séan Bannister). At Christmas time they hold what is logically called the Annual Garden Party. Last week it was held for 141st time. The WCC Club Captain and your truly were fortunate to be invited. It was a very jolly day where we almost rubbed shoulders (apparently rubbing shoulders is not allowed) with some of cycling’s great, good and historic. The highlight of the day was “Mr Mallard” being award with a trophy for the only PBC member to complete this year’s PBP.

Audax UK Prizegiving – The Willesden Haul!

Mark Brooking went the last weekend’s Audax UK AGM and Prizegiving and came back with this report…

The Audax do was a hoot as ever. Willesden came away with quite a haul – VC167 were not amused as they got nothing! So :-

Peter Turnbull – Mens individual champion.
Liam Fitzpatrick – Services to AUK Award (something to do with publicity)
Willesden CC – Club championship (won by the top 6 points totals – Peter Turnbull, Paul Stewart, Mel Kirkland,Martin Lucas, Richard Jennings & Liam Fitzpatrick.)

A pretty good haul.

Arabella Maude won the Ladies fixed wheel points championship & got a ‘Mugs’ award for stoking a tandem trike for 1230km in a somewhat toxic environment.

Damon Peacocks DVD has some marvelous footage with Paul Stewart nodding off in the background of a lengthy interview. He knows how to get in a state!!

Children in Need

Paul Doel, our only 2nd claim Life Member, organised his club Team Quest to ride the rollers in one hour stints for 24hours to raise money for Children in Need.  Steve and Julie May’s daughter, Stephanie rode for the opening hour at 3pm on Thursday. The BBC came on Friday and took some shots which were later used on the TV programme. So far they have collected over £1.300 and with some sponsor money still to come in the total will be around £2,000. Several of our club members visited the shop to give them encouragement and donations and at 1am a fox passed by. The riders covered over 750 miles. Must be all that turbo training that Kel gives them on a Tuesday night at the clubroom.
