London-Wales-London – Willesden’s new 400km Audax

screen-shot-2016-10-01-at-10-40-23

Looking for a 2017 challenge? Try the revamped club 400 audax next April!

The Willesden’s annual spring 400km audax has undergone a bit of a facelift. And members are being challenged to see if they can cope with a full day in the saddle.

We’re run the Severn Across for 14 years but from next year it is rebranded as the London-Wales-London along with a few refinements. It takes place on Saturday 29 April 2017.

screen-shot-2016-10-01-at-10-41-39

The much loved route goes from Chalfont St Peter to Chepstow and back. Riding at speeds of between 15 and 30 kph entrants visit Woodstock, Tewkesbury, the Severn Bridge, Malmsbury and Lambourn. Everyone gets a night ride and to enjoy the unique companionship that comes with audaxing.

In recent years Willesden riders have always made a good showing and although the format changes are intended to attract a new type of audaxer, the organisers hope that club members can ensure a good Willesden presence on the road and in the controls.

Volunteers have already come forward to staff the control at Lambourn but help is needed at the 6am start on the Saturday and at the finish through Saturday/ Sunday night. Volunteers to test the route a week or two before are most welcome.

Potential entrants or helpers can find out more by contacting organiser Liam FitzPatrick (lfitzpatrick01@gmail.com) or by visiting the www.londonwaleslondon.com

Race History and Trophies

The Willesden Cycling Club was founded in 1927 and our annual road race day is one of the premier events in our calendar. On race day we will have two trophies to contest, they are –

The “John Walker” Trophy

This is a E/1/2 Road race and is the main event of the day.

The winner will have their name engraved on the the prestigious and impressive trophy, which is a salute to a much loved club member, Mr John Walker.

John Walker was a great wit and raconteur in the Willesden CC and for many years he was the Master of Ceremonies at our annual club dinner. John was an avid jazz fan and his bike was badged up as a Stan Getz to honour the great American jazz saxophonist. John was also a creative and artistic person who had a talent for airbrushing incredibly intricate and dark satanic designs on to custom motorbikes.

A Riverside Report

Riverside 2 Riverside Ride Report

I had been watching the weather forecast all week and the spell of nice weather brought in a flurry of entries in the last 2 weeks. Wednesday 17th August started well with bright sunshine seeing 62 riders off from Jenner’s cafe in Maidenhead. We beat our record for a midweek ride as last year we had only 47 riders!!

CIMG0329[1]

There were riders and bikes of all shapes, sizes and ages, most of which managed around the course. It was good to see many of the regulars rolling up for another Riverside 2 Riverside and also many new faces as well. Thanks to Ian and Annie Birch who gathered up a crowd of Hillingdon CC and to Graham of Redhill CC who made it their midweek ride. It was great to see a good turnout of Willesden riders 12 or so in all.CIMG0337[1]

Thanks also to Gladys andRon Purdy for coming to see the ride in at Jenners. A big thank you to John and Mick, I couldn’t do it without you

Thanks for all your support guys. CIMG0330[1]The ride saw many ups, the biggest and best being Turville Hill and a few downs before reaching our 2nd riverside cafe in Benson. We had a few DNF mainly due to the heat. I think most people enjoyed it despite the heat and Turville Hill.
