- WoW – Mid week ride
Richard’s Race Report – 18 Dec 07
Despite the freezing cold weather I decided to race again at Hillingdon, luckily this week was dry but cold made up for it.
The race started off at a steady pace and the bunch were carefully watching Chris Moores, the series leader There were numerous moves from the top guys and with 7 laps to go a Sigma Sport rider rode off the front with amazing speed and left us all for dead. There was no reaction from the bunch and it looked like he would be gone for good.
I’d got involved in a few moves during the race but with no real success, I’m not really strong enough to do anything too exciting. With a lap to go I wasn’t in the best place for the sprint so I rode off the front and was quickly joined by a few riders. They were not willing to work with me so I backed off and saved it for the sprint. I managed to recover well and made up several places in the sprint finishing 15th.
I’ve now trebled my score for last season with a total of 3 points. Quite pleased with the result and showing some form for the new years day parade.

Blimey!!!
I just nipped out of the house this afternoon for a few essential Christmas fripperies. What do I find when I walking back home in deepest Willesden? A Team Quest rider cycling right past my house. On Willesden CC holy ground!
Surely there must be a club rule against this? Hundreds probably
Gladys and Jean please scrutinise the rule book and report back urgently.

Chiltern Hundred Challenge 2008 Sportif
John Wheatley has sent in details of the Chiltern Hundred Challenge 2008, which will be held on Sunday 1st June 2007. There are three rides available on the day. Full details are available on www.chiltern-hundred.org.uk .
Here are some of the headlines –
- The Gran Fondo will be 171km (107 miles) long, with ascent of 2,620m. The ride is an uncompromising romp across 171 km of the toughest and most picturesque terrain in the Chilterns. From Great Missenden the route runs north east through Chesham, Berkhamstead, to Dunstable Downs before heading south west along the Chilterns scarp slope.
- The Medio Fondo is 102km (63 miles) long climbing 1,730m. This event offers a tough 63 mile ride. This ride splits from the Gran Fondo shortly after the start and goes north through Ballinger Common before rejoining the Gran Fondo for the descent of Aston Hill en route to Wendover. It then follows the same route as the Gran Fondo to the finish.
- The Corto Fondo incorporating the Amersham Road Cycling Club 80km (50 mile) challenge. An undulating ride for all-comers. The route will be independent of the Gran Fondo and Medio Fondo and takes an undulating route across the Aylesbury plain before returning to the Chilterns and Great Missenden.
- The event will be much larger in 2008 with an entry limit of 400 riders on the line.
- All riders will be timed using transponder chips.
- For 2008 a team event will be added to the individual event.
- The HQ in Great Missenden.

Richard’s Race Report – 08 Dec 07
Well again it was looking a bit dodgy with the weather on Saturday. It was raining all day and I wasn’t sure if I should ride, I’ve had a cold all week so I decided to take the car down so I didn’t have to ride homewith soaking wet clothes.
The first few laps were very dodgy whilst we all found out limits round the corners, the circuit was very wet and since my crash in August I’ve been a bit of a girl at cornering. After 4 laps the race split up into 2 and I am afraid I got caught out in the back half, I tried to get across to the other group but it was too late and the fast guys were really pushing at the front.
I spent the rest of the race doing my turns and we were picking up a few riders along the way. I was trying to conserve my energy for the sprint but at the same time I was determined to keep the speed up so we could keep catching riders. We were lapped with 5 laps to go and things got confusing. Some of our group decided to take advantage and get on the back of the fast group. We were quite frustrated at this and there was quite a bit of shouting going on, with all the confusion I didn’t realise we were on the last lap and the pace increased up the finishing straight. I still managed to get 3rd in the sprint (20th overall) which was good considering I wasn’t really prepared but I need to concentrate more next week as I think this is letting me down.

New Years Day Parade – Details
I have received our instructions for the New Year’s Day Parade.
We are number 18 in the parade which means that we will be to the head of the Parade. The meeting point is in the Blue assembley area. Entry to this area is at the junction of Horseferry Road and Millbank. We will be along Millbank towards Abingdon Street. (Near to the Houses of Parliament).
The organisers have requested that we assemble between 10.00am and 11.00am. In practice, only our vehicles will need to be there so early as sometimes the road gets blocked with other large vehicle entries. So long as you arrive by about 11.30am on your bikes, all will be well.
Please wear a version of the Willesden kit. You won’t need cycling shoes as the event is very stop-start and there will be periods when we will be stationary. Wrap up warm underneath. It had been known to be nippy on New Year’s Day.
It will be an amazing day and a fantastic experience for newcomers and old hands alike. We will end the parade with our traditional celebration refreshment. The club’s official warming drink being Baileys and hot chocolate. There will be hot drinks at the start and some food on hand to stop us getting the bonk.
The Slipstreamers will be with us as usual and this year let’s get the largest Willesden Group ever in this amazing event.
Please put January 1st in your diary and join the parade.
Ray Kelly.
If you have any questions for Ray, then email him via willesdencyclingclub@yahoo.co.uk, with “NYD” Parade in the subject.

Italian Villa for rent
Willesden club member Dan Duncan-Jones has renovated an old farmhouse in Italy and is now offering it to us to rent. Called “La Casa Pietra” it is located just outside the town of Bubbio in southern Piemonte. It is approximately 45 miles from Turin and is in the middle of a triangle form by Milan, Genoa and Turin (Click on following map for larger image).
The web address is http://www.lacasapietra.co.uk/. Dan says “it’s in excellent cycling country with nice quiet windy roads and enough hills to keep Willesdenites happy.” It looks easy to reach by low cost airlines such as EasyJet (Luton – Turin) or Ryanair (Stansted – Genoa).
I think it would make an excellent base for those embarking on the Mille Miglia Audax ride next August. Rates and full contact details will be found on the web site.

Richard’s Race Report
After a sober night at my work Xmas party I drove home in some of the worst rain I have ever driven in, wondering if the next day would be dry enoughfor the first race at Hillingdon for the Imperial winter series. I woke up to dry weather, a bit of sun oh and man flu!
After a bit of indecision I decided I may as well race and have a bit of fun, it makes a change from riding around in the cold and the dark. The race was lively from the start with a few keen riders going for it and there were a few breaks, most of which didn’t really amount to anything. I didn’t want to over do it because of my cold so I took it easy and promised myself I wouldn’t be tempted to do anything too energetic.
Not much to report for the first half of the race but I started to feel very uncomfortable in my right leg and realised that the adjustments I had made to my cleats might not have been a very good idea. It felt like I had the right cleat too far forward and was using my toes to pedal. This was becoming quite painful and I wasn’t sure how long I would last. I was determined to make something of the day so I planned to stay in the bunch and try and get something from the sprint finish.
This all went to plan until two riders got ahead of the bunch and seemed to look like they might get away, so with 3 laps to go I put my foot down and tried to get to them. I looked behind me and realised I was just dragging the whole bunch with me so I pulled over to the right to let someone else take a turn but there was no response. I decided to rest for the finish however with half a lap to go I was badly placed and there was a small crash in front of me, two riders came off and I was caught behind them and pleased to stay on the bike.
After checking the other riders were OK I got back on my bike and finished my lap. To top it off I got soaked on my ride back home. Not a great day’s racing but at least I got all my bad luck out in one race.

Crest CC Tandem Weekend

Longbarrow captain – Mark Brooking
At the beginning of November Lynn Corr (formerly Francoli) and I attended the Crest CC tandem weekend. Apart from the screams of fear when tandem triking the roundabouts of Harlow on a Friday Night and a jumping chain throughout the event, all went well.
The event attracted about 30 crews. It’s really a pub crawl of entertaining proportions, with a following luggage van (driven by a gent who used to race against Johnny Walker) and mechanic.
Friday saw us triking in last place up to the cycling club huts near Henham via a few hostelries – it wasn’t until 01:30am till our gear arrived from the lock-in at the pub. Saturday gave us a leisurely wind and rain assisted run to a pub in Edwardstone for lunch and a sing song before departing for the George in Colchester – a 14th century Inn with very comfortable rooms.

After dinner it was off around Colchester with the organiser and an out of date “Good Beer” guide, looking for real ale. Most of the establishments we tried to find were now either estate agents or pizzerias. Finally we made it to the Hole-in-the-wall until closing time.
Sunday’s return leg was to Great Saling for lunch and onward to the finish at Kelvedon Hatch to retrieve the luggage.
The event is roughly 100km each way. For us the round trip was 245km over the weekend. A good trip for lovers of weekend breaks with real ale, good company and a bit of cycling thrown in for good measure.
One of the crews remembered sitting in behind myself and the late Jon Jennings on my Jack Taylor Longbarrow, as we battled in to the wind from Norwich back in the late 80’s. So it’s a small world.
Willesden crews and solos will be most welcome on next years event.
Overall route was via:-
Dark Star Hophead, Normans Conquest,
Wolf Lupus, 8.25% Cider,
Mild, Dogs Bol****s, Old Growler
Finishing off with a little bit of ESB.
Mark Brooking

Cycling to Australia – John Hardwood
Many of us in the Willeden will know John Harwood, he rode with us on the 2003 Paris-Brest. This year he has site his sights much further afield and is cycling from his home town in Oxfordshire to Australia.
John has been keeping a very witty blog to record his adventures as he pedals his away across the planet. I have been reading his entries each day but I’m not gaining on him! He’s still countless countries and a continent ahead of me. From now on I shall be known as Thousand Miles Back. Latest reports are that John is in India, whilst I’m still reading his blog as he is rather worringly heading north through the old Russian empire??!!Has he borrowed Mel’s compass?

Sardinia 1,000 km Audax/Grandfondo
1,000 km. Sardinia Total Climbing m. 8,355 or 9,605
For several years now Sardinia has hosted a 7-day sportive/stage race during the Spring. This year it will take place between Sunday 20 April to Saturday 26 April.
Audax Italia are putting together a 1000km route that cleverly incorporates the two of the major sportives, at the beginning and end of the week, with brevets of 204, 210 and 270 kilometres. To make it even more interesting a sortie to Corsica has also been included.
Following are the details translated from Audax Italia.
Following are the details translated from Audax Italia.
Sunday 20 April: “Granfondo Sardinia”
Departure: at 09.30 Total distance: km. 146
Total climbing: m. 2,535

Departure: at 09.30 Total distance: km. 146
Total climbing: m. 2,535

This is beautiful and varied route which takes you from the Straits of Bonifacio, inland to Gallura.
From S. Teresa, you follow the coast road for about 40 km until you reach the turn off for Isola Rossa; then you go inland climbing to the town of Trinità d’Agultu (365 m) where there is the first feeding station; you stay on the high plain for 8k until you reach the Cantoniera Iuncu followed by a fast descent to Viddalba; then you start to pedal on a very beautiful inland road with steep stretches to 600 metres; from Bortigiadas (479 m) you take the main road which climbs back up to the typical Sard town of Aggius (514 m) followed by the second feeding station; the route then alternates through wooded areas (cork trees) and rugged areas surrounded by granite rocks sculpted by the wind and rains; after a water stop near Aglientu (417 m) you descend to the sea for the last 20k on the coast road until you get back to S. Teresa.

Monday 21 April: “Patent Sardinia 1”

Total climbing: m. 1,680
Departure: at 06.30 Total distance: km. 270
Total climbing: m. 1,680
A long but easy “galoppata” along the coastal road north, crossing Porto Torres, to get to the beach of “La Pelosa”. Return by the same route. The only real problem could be the mistral that blows very strong in the Strait of Bonifacio
Tuesday 22 April: “Patent Sardinia 2”
Departure: at 06.30 Total distance: km. 204
Total Climbing m. 1,700
Departure: at 06.30 Total distance: km. 204
Total Climbing m. 1,700
This goes to the east coast of Sardinia. From the village, crossing Arzachena, you go down to Olbia then along the Eastern Sarda to Theodore S. and Budoni then back after seeing the beaches and views of Agrustos and Port of Ottiolu. It is largely flat…easy if there is no wind!
.
Wednesday 23 April: Rest
.
Thursday 24 April – “Patent Corsica”
Departure: at 06.30 Total distance: km. 210
Total Climbing: m. 350 or m. 1,600
Departure: at 06.30 Total distance: km. 210
Total Climbing: m. 350 or m. 1,600
We leave together to get the first ferry crossing to Corsica. There are two alternative routes, both of 210 km.
Route 1
This will be in a northerly direction along the coast via Porto Vecchio, and Solenzara Ghisonaccia to Aleria where it reverses back to the ferry. This is virtually all flat and allows you to make a few brief tourist diversions through the Gulf of Santa Giulia, Palombaggia beach, Gulf of Pinarellu, town of Porto Vecchio, beaches and coastal ponds etc.
Route 2
This will be in a northerly direction along the coast via Porto Vecchio, and Solenzara Ghisonaccia to Aleria where it reverses back to the ferry. This is virtually all flat and allows you to make a few brief tourist diversions through the Gulf of Santa Giulia, Palombaggia beach, Gulf of Pinarellu, town of Porto Vecchio, beaches and coastal ponds etc.
Route 2
This goes to Solenzara and then into the mountains. A beautiful way to reach the Col de Bavella (1,218 m.) and from there to Zonza and then on to Sartene along quiet roads with little traffic. It then returns to Boniface via Ajaccio and the scenic south coast. This option will definitely be beautiful and varied, the difficult climb of the Col of Bavella be taken in the middle of the stage. Whatever the choice you will make in any case remember that the last ferry leaves relatively early!
Because of the unusual nature of the day and the structure of routes, the organization will provide one / two cars that serve as support from control points. NB- the cost of the ferry is NOT included in the registration fee and is to be borne by each participant.
Friday 25 April: “Granfondo CostaSmeralda”
Departure: at 09.30 Total distance: km. 170
Total Climbing: m. 2,090
Departure: at 09.30 Total distance: km. 170
Total Climbing: m. 2,090
This is known as the “most beautiful Granfondo in the world” . This year’s route is actually more attractive whilst maintaining the essence of the original’s panoramas. This includes the Costa Smeralda, the coast road of Cannigione with the famous crossing at the beach of Saline and the panoramic feeding station at Palau. For 2008 some fast inland roads have been added to show the beauty of the Gallura and the stunning pass at San Pantaleo.

Women’s Freestyle Keep Fit Club
Brian Wright runs a Women Fitness Club at the Hillingdon Circuit each Friday afternoon. The aim of the club is to learn to ride and to get fitter in the process, oh, and there is a fair bit of tea drinking as well. There is no minimum standard, just bring along a good sense of humour.
Brian and his team of coaches have taught a number of women how to ride a bike for the first time. The club runs every Friday afternoon from 1:30pm to 4:30pm. At present membership is free, so hurry up and join. There are bikes available to borrow if you can not bring your own.
For more details email willesdencyclingclub@yahoo.co.uk and put “Women’s Freestyle” in the Subject field.

Bike Piano
Vyv and I were in Antwerp last weekend, a city that loves its bicycles and also its buskers. Before the benefit of first Belgian beer of the day, we spotted the above street artist combing the two. Is it a bike converted into a piano, or a piano converted into a bike?
Inspired by this Vyv is finalising her design for a similar machine to convey the world’s largest praline chocolate back to blighty!

Annual General Meeting – Sunday 2nd December 2007
The AGM is the most important meeting of our club’s year. As members of the Willesden CC we should all attend this meeting to have our say on how the club should be run. It is also an excellent chance to eat cake, drink tea and chat with your club mates.
This year the AGM moves to a larger venue, the Guide Hut in Community Close, Ickenham (close to the junction of Swakeleys Lane and Long Lane) .
Start time has yet to be confirmed to me, but it will be around 2:30pm. A full agenda will be circulated to you by post
Please, please attend, it is important for the future of our club.
