I managed to finish 11th last night in the E/1/2/3 race at Hillingdon and got a prize for the 2nd placed 3rd cat rider.
PCA had a large presence at the race and controlled the race throughout however I managed to sneak in at the front of the sprint. Rich Cooper and John both rode however I do not know exactly where theywere placed yet.

Last week in a jolly daring adventure Bunty-Jayne managed to seized the inner most secret of the Westerly CC. At great personal danger, her plan was to infiltrate their ranks posing as an ace bicycle polo player. In a brilliant wheeze to gain their confidence, she choose as her polo steed a full-on track bike complete with drop handle bars.
After thrilling match she managed to prise Captain Caldicott’s devastatingly tasty Chicken BBQ recipe and brought it home to the blog. To protect the guilty and incriminate the innocent the Squadra Verde has suitably renamed it Velo Pollo.
Here’s Bunty’s report of her brilliant adventure ……

The Paine Report: Willesden V Westerley Bicycle Polo and BBQ 16.07.08
Bike polo: not so much Pimms and ponies as buckets of beer and barging about a lumpy field in the west London twilight. This was an epic contest, pitching the forces of Good (well, me and Jim Mears for Willesden) against the, frankly, rather Dodgy (“Captain” Roly Collicott and the Chuckle Brothers for the Westerley).
We were outnumbered and expecting things to be a little rough… then we were handed golf clubs. Oh dear. My mount was a feisty little track bike from the stable of ace Gregario and compulsive trainer Mike Diggins. Lovely if you were in a velodrome or born before the freewheel was invented (Rocco?). Mike had thoughtfully lowered the seat – perhaps so that my knees would would protect my ears. They didn’t. Jim sat tall in the saddle of what initially appeared to be a very sturdy mountain bike. His noble form was like a bright torch against the darkness that was Westerley. Sadly, however, his mount pegged out 5 minutes in to the game and Jim , nobility surrendered , spent an awfully long time bent over it . His beam still shone though.
From my position – usually face down in the mud as I fell off again – things did not look good for the Willesden. The other side’s tittering henchmen, Ginger (Dave Newman , scourge of the Amersham Road TTs ) and The Other One (Malc Woolsey, scourge of nurses everywhere) couldn’t stop scoring. The rather lovely umpire, Paul Barker, was on our side from the start after I passed him Darlene Rini’s telephone number; but not even he could hold them back and they raced into what appeared to be an unassailable lead.
I was beginning to wonder when the date-rape drug slipped to Capt. Collicott would kick in , when suddenly it did , and much better than expected ! Instead of falling to the ground spread-eagled ,as per the information leaflet , he started knocking the ball repeatedly into his own net – what a decent chap he is. We were catching up! Then the skulduggery started: the Titter Twins dismounted and started running with the ball, Ginger tried to make off with my golf club wedged firmly between his legs (Mike Diggins and Richard Jerome will thank me for that ) and I saw Jim Mears, now back in the saddle , on the receiving end of a nasty smirk from The Other One. Well rested, Jim scored some terrific goals in the final few minutes. At five-all, the umpire wrapped it up, as the crowd had long since stopped watching our shennanigans and , more importantly ,the grub was fast disappearing.
I had concussion , but I’m pretty certain we all had a really jolly time !
PS Captain Collicott may have been affected by the drug for some hours afterwards as I was able to extract from him his tightly guarded recipe for the rather scrumptious chicken . Please note that Willesden Cycle Club is in no way responsible for the outcome of following this recipe .
Velo Pollo (A.K.A.Captain Collicott’s Secret Tandoori Chicken Recipe)
Note: this recipe is based on something I got from my Indian guru many years ago high in the Himalayas when I was searching for the meaning of life and the answer to constipation, but I have adapted it countless times since. Now, it isn’t very authentic, but it is quite quick and suitable for a reasonable-size gathering. I do it all by guesswork so the quantities are only a guide.
12 drumsticks (of course, you can also do thighs, or chicken quarters, but adjust quantities accordingly.
Some lemon juice and salt
Ginger: about 2 cubic centimetres (either keep root ginger in the freezer and grate what you need, or buy the very convenient (i.e. cheating) frozen crushed ginger available from Asian sections of supermarkets).
Garlic: about 4-6 cloves, crushed preferably, otherwise very thinly sliced/chopped.
Garam masala: about half a spice-pot-full Perhaps 4 heaped teaspoonfuls.
Yoghurt: about 200 mil
You can add red colouring if you want it to look ‘trad colour’, although I don’t.
1 Bicycle Polo Match (optional)
Skin the chicken and cut two or three deep slashes into the flesh. Sprinkle with lemon juice and salt and leave for an hour or two (although it’s often less if I’m in a hurry).
Make a paste from the yoghurt, garam masala, garlic and ginger. Drain off the juices from the chicken and coat each piece of chicken with the sauce. Leave to marinate overnight (preferably) in the fridge and cook on BBQ or in the oven (something like 40 min at 140 deg C, but that’s a wild guess).
As I recall, the authentic dish has tomatoes and green chillies. I used to make the sauce in two batches (simultaneously), with far more chilli mix in one, so that the spicy fans and the wimps could mix and match by using more or less hot sauce. Also, the tomatoes make the sauce runnier, which is fine for a wet curry, but I find a thicker paste works better on the BBQ.
Finally, I’d again stress that the quantities are very personal and if you’re feeling spicy, don’t hesitate to whack in extra garlic, ginger and garam masala.
Happy cooking.!!!
Mixed bag again this week.
Whilst Richard Jerome was riding on the Eelmore circuit and taking 7th place on Wednesday evening some of the club members were enjoying a game of bicycle polo and a BBQ at the Westerley C.C. club room.
On Saturday Jayne and Richard were in action again. Jayne rode in the Women’s Crits at Hillingdon and secured 4th place. Richard finished in the bunch in the Terry Cronin Crits on the same circuit.
The time trialist were in action down at Aldermarston in the North Hampshire Road Club 10. Gill Reynolds again took fastest lady witha 25.54, Brian Moon recorded 27.38 and Ron Purdy 30.04.
Sunday morning on the Amersham Road in the West London Combine 50, which had to be shortened to 49.5 miles due to roadworks, Richard Jerome finished in the top five with a 2.10.09 equivalent to 2.11.36 for the 5o mile distant. Jason Maddocks made it to the turn in 1.25.42 but failed to finish.
The weather appears to be getting warmer so lets hope we can look forward to some faster times this week.
More next week!
Cheers Gladys.
Dear all
Thanks for coming to support another fun event. The polo was particularly entertaining for participants and spectators alike. Jim and Jayne represented the Willesden, with Dave and Malc for the Westerley. I played for both teams (not simultaneously). Thanks to Paul for umpiring, despite our scant knowledge of the rules and the competitors’ blatant disregard for them anyway. Jayne had previously said that she was ‘wildly enthusiastic’ about playing and it showed, as she ploughed in to those tackles, on a borrowed track bike, which was fairly inappropriate for the task. Not that any of the rest of us were much better behaved!:
The result: A well deserved draw at 5-all (with time being called at the end of the final chukkah by our resident diplomat and umpire, Paul).
I would definitely like to build this up to a larger annual inter-club event (preferably with about twice as many people attending). It’s absolutely crazy fun and too good to miss, so make a point of signing up for a game next year.
Thanks again to the competitors, and to Jim and Wendy Mears for helping me set things up earlier and to Vince for manning the BBQ for much of the evening
Cheers, Roly

Got 7th last night, 3 in a break for most of the race. I tried to catch them about 15 times, then I accepted it wouldn’t work! So I organised a bunch chase. The bunch were a bit bit slow so we never really dented the gap.
Went on my own with 3/4 of a lap left but I got caught quite quickly so I sat up to recover and had a little left to go past a couple of riders in the sprint.

Ian Why was at Hillingdon yesterday where he met Graham LeSaux who was promoting his charity for Prostate Cancer. IAn wa most impressed with Graham’s commitment to cycling and his charitable cause and suggested we spread the word via the WWW (World Wide Willesden)
Hi John,
I have attached the poster for the charity I spoke to you about earlier.
Graham leSaux, ex Chelsea footballer, is one of the charity’s ambassadors who was giving interviews to BBC radio London and TV plus various radio phone interviews for commercial stations He also rode round the circuit with Tony Gibb for the TV.
Graham seemed to know quite a lot about cycling and rode very well, he also has a holiday home on Majorca and made enquiries about training camps on the island.
He is now cycles and plays tennis to keep fit.
Cheers Ian

Road Racing
It has been a blustery weekend and this has affected the results. On Tuesday evening down at Hillingdon John Williams and Rich Cooper rode to finish in 16th and 17th places in the 4th cat. race.
Richard Jerome rode at Eelmore in the 40 mile Surrey League event on Wednesday evening and finished in 15th place. He also rode in the Finchley Road Club event on Sunday. Richard got away with another rider for two laps. He had to rest on the last lap as he didn’t have enough in his legs to go on his own. He fellow escapee did not help so he had to do tons of work to try and maintain the gap. He finished in a very good fifth place and really enjoyed himself.
Testers
On Saturday Brian Moon recorded 27.46 in the Herts Wheelers.
Sunday saw Ed Packard riding the ECCA 100 and he covered the 1st 50miles in 2hours 8minutes but the wind did not ease up and he finished in 4.32.22.
Club Run
The club run was to Benson to see the Veteran Cycle Rally but only the Old Timers in their cars braved the weather. Taking part was Rory McGrath, the TV presenter, and Ron Purdy, Ron Newell, Margaret Brett and Stan Vygus were enlisted to be part of the “crowd” at the finish line.
Cheers for now,
Gladys
We are in the process of integrating the blog into the brand new WCC web site. So there may be the odd hold up or bump along the information highway over the next few days.
John
Turning to time trialling Gill Reynolds continues to dominate the club results. This week she went to ride the C.C. Breckland 10 on Wednesday evening and took the 2nd fastest lady with a time of 25.37. On Saturday she rode in the Newbury Road Club 10 and finished in 25.25 in 3rd fastest lady position. Ron Purdy recorded 30.23 in this event. Sunday she again returned to Newbury to ride in the 25 mile event and finishing in 1.6.37 was awarded the prize for the overall winning lady in both events. Brian Moon also rode and recorded 1.9.38.
Ed Packard rode the Leo R.C. 30 mile on Saturday and finished in 15th place in 1.13.02, and a glutton for punishment , got up early again to ride the Godric 50 mile on Sunday recording 2.12.00.
We are cheesed off with the Daily Telegraph as they don’t include many cycling results. Even the Ladies Road Race Championship didn’t get a mention!
Cheers Gladys

Richard Jerome bagged a creditable 12th place in our E/1/2/3 road race on Tuesday night! Furthermore he picked up £10 for getting 2nd place in the 3rd cat race. Overall Richard says that’s his best ever ride in a E/1/2/3 race.
Richard seemed well placed in the peloton throughout the race. He was on the wheel of John, the eventual winner of the bunch sprint, up until the last corner. Richard takes up the story, “I had it perfect. John sprinted out of the last corner to gain position. As he was about five back and I didn’t go with him because I thought he was opening his sprint and I didn’t want to go that early. Can’t help thinking what if I’d taken his wheel though? That would have given me 5th place”.
Jayne Payne, Richie Cooper, John Williams and Darleen Rini finished in the bunch in the Cat 4 race. All are improving and points should be soon be coming their way.
