Tim Wainwright’s bikes for sale

Especially if you audaxed, you would have known long-time Willesden member Tim Wainwright. Tim sadly died in March 2017, and now his wife Pauline, herself a cyclist, is putting his bikes up for sale.

His audaxing career started in the late 80s and he died as the result of a colliding with a parked van when out on his bike. He rode in most major audax events and had a host of audax palmares. When he wasn’t riding himself, he was expertly photographing events. He managed to make time to edit one edition each year of Arrivee, Audax UK’s magazine. He was also a thoroughly likeable man.

http://www.eastsurreyctc.co.uk/pages/TimWainwright.htm is a very good tribute to Tim.

There are two bikes: BOTH HAVE NOW BEEN SOLD!

Mercian Flam Red

  • £195 ono
  • 23 1/2″ Touring / Audax bike frame no suggests 1986 built
  • 531 respray sticker -probably 531 db or similar
  • Campag triple 46/42/26.     9sp STI 13- 28
  • Shimano hubs & brakes. Wheels run true
  • Campag 27.2 seat pin

Mercian red bike

small ding to top tube otherwise perfectly straight

Shorter Blue

  • 23 1/2″ Audax  Frame no suggests 1974 built. All straight
  • £175 ono
  • 531 respray sticker as above.
  • SR chainset 48/42/26
  • 7sp bar end 13 – 28
  • Campag hubs. Shimano brakes / gear mechs.
  • Campag 27.2 seat pin

Shorter blue bike

Both ready to run. Would make excellent winter / commuting bikes

Tim’s friend Paul Coan is dealing with the sale. If you are interested please contact him at paulcoan at hotmail.co.uk

Message from your time trial secretary and deputy club runs leader

The West London CA 25 was held on 7th April. Jaysel recorded a 1.08.58. A great ride considering he rode the 32 miles out to the event into a headwind! The conditions were cool and foggy. Gill managed a 1.22.27 – a slow time but a lot of effort went into it. Brian Moon and Ray Green and Derek were out to support he Willesden Riders. Casey Matthews was unable to start due to illness.

The next West London CA 25 is on the 19th May. The Willesden is down to help the Twickenham with the marshalling. If you can help with the marshalling please let Gill know. We are no longer running the 50 so helping marshalling this 25 is not too much to ask.

If members want to ride the event on the 19th May can they let Gill know (07594435107 or g.reynolds@live.co.uk)) by 12th May.

As the Willesden members will be either marshalling or riding this event – the club run destination has been changed to the Coffee Shop at Aston Clinton.

If any one has any ideas for a club run destination (or want to lead one) can they let me know. Gill

Cycle Circuit Fridays – now on at Hillingdon

FRIDAY SESSIONS ARE BACK!

STOP PRESS!!  There WILL be a session on Good Friday 19 April, which makes it Really Good Friday.

Please support your club by attending.  You can ride, train, or just drop by for a chat and a mug of tea.  Willesden CC needs more members to support it by attending these sessions.  Your membership also entitles you to a discount on the already modest fee for Fridays, and you will be making a £2 saving on the cost we charge non-members to ride.  This all helps contribute to the hire of the circuit.

Club coaches are always on hand, giving their time voluntarily to provide you with guidance, support and training to achieve your goals for the season.  All levels are catered for.

Sessions start from 5:30pm.

Please check the images below for a taste of what you’re missing.

Willesden Rovers Cycling Club 1888

I spotted this posting on the Willesden Local History Society. It is from a newspaper said to have been published in 1888. Note the time the club run starts.

Anyone have any further information on the Willenden Rovers?

Samaitans Cycle Sportive – 29th June 2019

I am part of the team that organise the Samaritans Cycle Ride in West Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.
We are a stone’s throw away from London. I am contacting all the cycling clubs I can find and ask them to tell their members of our charity cycling event.

The Samaritans Cycle Sportive is now in its third year and is firmly established as one of the best value sportive events in the Chilterns and is situated on London’s doorstep. With all proceeds going to the Chiltern Samaritans.

All entrants completing any of the 3 routes will receive a free glass of local Ale, a free burger, a shiny medal and during the ride, enjoy wonderful free feed stations and to take in the glorious Chilterns area of outstanding natural beauty scenery together with chipped timing. (the chipped timing will also put riders into Gold, Silver or Bronze for their times/age). Tickets from only £15 !!

The Samaritans Cycle Charity sportive consists of 3 routes, 20, 50 & 80 miles. The 50 & 80 mile routes include the infamous Whiteleaf Hill and the Whiteleaf Challenge when the fastest of the day will get the Whiteleaf Challenge trophy.

All three routes have excellent route management, which includes chip timing, gpx file, signage and marshals on the day.

I am also part of Amersham Cycling club and other members of the team are Wycombe Cycling Club, so any events you need promoting to other clubs, please contact me and we can distribute to our clubs and advertise them on our websites.

Many thanks,
Peter Hart

Verulam Reliability Ride (VRR) – Sunday 3rd March 2019

Another Reliability in the Chiltern Classic Series. The start at Redbourn is a short drive up the M1.

Two routes:

The main route is 114km (71 miles) whilst the shorter route is 79km (49 miles). The rides follow two challenging routes, starting in Redbourn (AL3 7PP). The main route has 6 significant climbs including Whiteleaf, Wardrobes, Wigginton Lane and New Road.  The course is not particularly difficult but it is a tough test, making it a good training ride for the early Spring. The shorter route misses out Whiteleaf and Wardrobes, but has the added benefit of including The Crong!

Registration from 8.00am for departures from 9.00am, leaving in waves of 15 (max).

HQ address: Redbourn Recreation Centre, 75 Dunstable Rd, Redbourn AL3 7PP

Entry fee in advance £8, £10 on the day (if available)

WILLESDEN HISTORICAL SLIDES/PHOTOS

Jim Love was the Willesden President for many years and he contacted me because he has in his possession a large number of slides and photos of the Willesden dating back to the 1920’s.  He was wondering whether there is anyone  in the Club who knows how to transfer these historical items into a format for the 21st century.  Let me know if someone could help, I am sure the Club will cover any expenses.

The 2018 The John & Dulcie Walker Memorial Road Races

The following is a big thank you from Jayne Paine (Race Director for the John and Dulcie Walker) to all the volunteers who helped make the 2018 John and Dulcie Walker races such such an amazing and successful event. As you can see it takes a huge number of people to make these races happen.

Jayne has also given an excellent write up of the event in her own original style.

In my view the biggest thank you must go to Jayne herself. She has transformed the running of this annual happening in to what is a very slick and prestigious event. Her hard work, leadership skills and flair for handling people is remarkable. Thank you Jayne for all the fabulous work you have done for the Willesden Cycling Club.

Miles Back (AKA Lord of the Zip ties)

The John and Dulcie Walker Memorial Road Races

The road races were yet again glittering events studded with cycling stars from around the country, but mainly from a 50mile radius of Oxford.

The real stars however were the many, many people who gave up their time and energy to make the John and Dulcie a real favourite on the calendar, and I can’t thank them enough.

Over the last five years that I have been the organiser there were people absent this year due to holidays and 21st birthdays who have always in the past helped hugely and they should not be missed out in this list of the fabulous:
Nici Savage
Lauren Savage
Kirsten Savage
and I suppose Tony Savage for letting us have his family for a week of shopping, cooking and baking, making tea, and podium duties.
Wendy Mears
Jim Mears
Gerry McManus

Also there are the people whose advice and guidance have been indispensable to me, they have made this rather tricky job a lot less stressful:
Des Gaylor
Mark Doel
Aiden Hegarty
Patrick Kavanaugh
Mick Clarke
Ian Chatsworth
John Davies
Trevor Smith

The British Horse Society and the Horse & Hound put our races on their social media feeds which helped to ensure safe racing and riding for all road users.
Thank you the village of Little Milton for having an excellent hall and an excellent pub!

And thank you to the 160 riders who came and gave us their all.

Racing Roundup
So let’s talk about the races. It was a dry day, some sunshine, S/W wind moderate.
There were full fields of 80 riders in both the events.

The racing started with the Dulcie Walker, a Regional B race for 3rd + 4th Cat riders which involved 60miles, 3.75 laps, of the Great Milton Course.
The riders rolled out of HQ at 9.30.
At the end of the first lap the notorious pinch-point got both pointy and pinchy. One rider ended up wiping his nose the full length of an on-coming car and few others had a bit of a lie-down. Forever sporting, the riders ahead of the crash made a run for it. Kicking the dead and dying out of the way, those caught behind the crash gave chase.
Lives were laid on the line, wheels were sacrificed and looks were exchanged, but there was to be only one winner of The Dulcie Walker Poniard.

1st – David Roper – Ride 24/7 – winner of the Dulcie Walker Memorial Poniard
2nd – Cian Smailes – N-Fuse Identity Racing
3rd – Robert Attread – Maidenhead and District CC

Junior – Jack Brooks – Bicester Millenium CC – winner of the Giant Chupa-Chup
Prime- David Roper – Ride 24/7

Actually, with prizes down to 15 there were lots of winners and Gladys and I congratulated them in the time-honoured podium-girl way, because we are old-fashioned and because we could.

Then before you had time to say cake, it was roll-out for the premier event on the road-racing calendar, The John Walker Memorial Road Race for Elites, 1st and 2nd Cat racers. Some of the best in the country were there, and those that were not sent telegrams.

The 80 mile race kicked off with a no-holds-barred scramble for position. Very quickly a break formed. There were chasers, and chasers chasing the chasers. It was fast. It was dynamic. It was all going on. The four NEG motos and the lead cars and comms had one helluva job, and as I was in a lead car driven by our own Ray ‘Skid-Pan’ Kelly I should know. But I can’t give a proper race report because most of the time I had my eyes closed. I can tell you that is was action packed, with near-misses, attacks into on-coming traffic, disqualifications and hair-pulling.

So me and Gladys put on our cherry chap-stick, Ray wet his whistle and we got down to the serious business of prize giving and the handing over of the gleaming, silver John Walker Memorial Trophy.

1st – Joshua Boyman – Hoops Velo
2nd – William Scott – Flamme Rouge
3rd – Joseph Clark – Cycling Sheffield Giant

Junior – Joshua Sandman – Team Backstedt Bike Performance , winner of the Lego Set
Prime – Joshua Boyman – Hoops Velo

Then it was up to The Lamb for the traditional schooner or two of sherry.
What a day.

Jayne Paine
