Blasts from the past

Derek’s photos helped enliven the recent TT report – “a picture’s worth a thousand words” they say. There were no photos of Derek himself, though, so I thought I’d borrow the WCC Tardis and post a few pictures from the past.

Derek in 1951 – Kingston Phoenix event. Look out for that traffic!

A more recent pic of our snapper

That’s Gill on the track, but which track? Answers in the comments please.
And who is this? Again, answers in the comments please.
If you have any old photos of club members in action, I can scan and post them here if you’d like.

Team Time Trialling, Team Sprint and Team Pursuit

Dream team? Not with me on Peter’s wheel!

The art of team riding in time trials and on the track is a skill worth developing. Riding close to other riders at high speed pushes you, develops technique and feels like flying (if you’re doing it right).

Richie Jerome has suggested entering some teams in the Surrey League time trials including the league’s 4-up Team Time Trial Championship on 11th September – anyone interested? Let Richie or me know if you’d like to give it a go.

I’ve listed below some TTTs coming up.

7th August – 13:30 – Surrey League Staplefield 2-up TT – Handcross
8th August – 07:45 – Farnham RC 25ml 2-up and 4-up TTT – H25/8 (Bentley)
14th August – 13:30 – Surrey League Staplefield 2-up TTT – Handcross
17th August – 19:00 – Bicester Millennium CC 10ml 4-up TTT (closed roads) – H2.5/20
28th August – 14:00 – Maidenhead and Dist CC 29ml 2-up TTT –
11th September – 13:30 – Surrey League 4-up TTT Championship – Alfold Crossways

TTTs can be a great way to train for the team track events as well. Don’t forget…

21st August Willesden Track Championship 2pm to 4pm Welwyn arrive at track by 1.30

Central Region Track Championships all at Reading Velodrome. Entry details here.

7th June Monday 7.30 500m Sprint

RRTYA -Part 4

Mark Brooking continues with his monthly reports on the RRTYA challenge, which he is doing with Wendy Mears. This particular Audax award requires riders to complete a 200km Audax each and every month during a year.

This month Mark has two reports for us – one on the Dorset Coast (which he has ridden for the last 30 years or so) and the other on the Witham 200km

Miles Back

The Dorset Coast.

A ride with an awesome reputation for steepness furthur complicated by its
early season location on the calender. This years edition saw Mark Brooking, Chris Beynon & Peter Turnbull brave the early morning chill from the day’s NNE wind to join the peleton for the first stage of the ferry dash around Poole harbour.

View of Chesil Beach (and the Brooking bike) from the top

By devoius means Mark avoided the crush to leave the ferry and lead the ride for the first few miles in a brief moment of glory before the onset of gravity at Studland saw him migrate towards the back of the field for the rest of the event.

It was (for a change) a glorious day for the ride with a favourable wind all the way to Axminster.
I made it to Weymouth and scoffed my onboard second breakfast – provided by our hotel who now understand my needs.

Various riders commented that they hadn’t seen me go this fast for a long time.
Little did they know that Willesdens champion foodie was on a mission:-
Part of the 3 night deal at the hotel included DINNER, bed & breakfast and it was paid for
So a brisk finish was called for.

So far I was matching last years pace, the next section had most of the nasty climbs – would my dodgy leg hold out? Yes it did – and for the first time this millenium I rode up every hill and cruised into Axminster well up on the previous years ride. Not walking had gained me half an hour in the hardest 20km of the ride.

The ladies at the School Control in Axminster did us proud yet again and suitably refuelled I headed for the infamous Sector lane and a possible headwind to the finish. Strangely the wind wasn’t really a problem and I stopped at the top of the highest point on the ride at Eggardon hill to admire the vista of West Dorset and a clear view of the lumps & bumps covered earlier in the day.

The ladies at the Axminster control perpare for the challenge of feeding Mark!

A quick whizz down the Roman road to Dorchester for Something with Custard at the Top ‘O’ town Café before the home straight. It took just over an hour to cover the last section of 24km to get back to the finish at Wareham Quay.

Back to base and showered ready for a 19:30 dinner. I won’t be going that fast again until the same time next year!!!!

Witham Westerly 200.

Mark Brooking & Wendy Mears rode this one Jim Mears rode the first 64km out to Wallys Café at Acton. Peter Turnbull & Andrew Deaner were also there but soon dropped us.

A warm & sunny day out with about 2000m of climbing in it. With three sit down feeds we still managed to get around before dark It was a close thing – would we be Lanterne rouge again?
There were 3 riders behind us at the penultimate control and they passed us on the climb up to little Baddow right at the end. However they were following a GPS track and within sight of the end we encountered one of them riding towards us telling us we were going the wrong way!!!
Technology had sent the rider off around the course again so we made it home in record time for Wendy – and we weren’t last this time!!

Yours until next Month, Mark Brooking

TT reports – 1/2/3 May (photos added)

Saturday

L’Equipe Vert headed to Theale to ride the West London CA 10m TT on the H10/1 course. Rain threatened but held off. There was a headwind to the turn and a crosswind back (how do they do that?).

Peter Cookson was the fastest WCC rider despite getting his old bike out of the loft for the race (apparently the new bike needs a bit of tuning). Peter returned a season’s best of 23:52 (20th place and +5:42 on standard). Someone else experimenting with kit was Chris James. He decided to ride in trainers. Apparently it helps on the hills. Either that or he left his cycling shoes at home. Chris did a 26:23 (38th, +4:07) which we think is a club ‘in daps’ record.

Gill Reynolds was the fastest woman, just missing her second 25 minute ’10’ of the season – recording a 26:03 (34th, +5:57). I chalked up a season’s best of 24:25 (23rd, +3:21). I’ve blogged about it here. The event was won by Tony Gibb in a 20:22. There were 51 finishers.

Sunday

Peter Dixon and I drove up to Tempsford for the Icknield RC ’25’ on the F1/25B. The weather got worse and worse as we drove and we arrived to be told the event had been cancelled on safety grounds. It was the right decision. Still, home before 9am for a second breakfast.

Several of the Green Team were down to ride the WLCA ’25’ on the H25/4. This too, however, was affected by rain – flooding reducing it to a ’10’ on the HCC180 course. Simon Wicks and Stuart Birnie kept the green flag flying: Simon recorded 25:00 for third place and Stuart did a 26:41. Malcolm Woolsey (Westerley CC) won in 23:47. Hippy’s blog report is here and Simon’s is here. Full result here.

Bank Holiday Monday:

Five Willesdenistas took to the line at the VTTA 10m TT on a cool cold and breezy Monday morning (Ron ‘The Purdmeister’ Purdy was a DNS). The H10/22 course from Marlow has a few ups and downs, but it’s pretty sheltered and has a good road surface.

WCC stars of the day were Gill Reynolds, Peter Cookson, Chris James and Peter Dixon. Gill (26:50, +5:10 on standard) and Peter C (back on his best bike – 24:35, +4:59) won the team award. Chris (26:33, +3:57) reverted to normal cycling shoes and won the most improved on standard award. Peter D (23:15, +2:27) was the fastest WCC rider, recording a PB and finishing in sixth place, and all this after losing about a minute with a shipped chain. I did a 25:20 (+2:26). Fastest rider on the day was Chris Ball (Sigma Sport) with a 21:05.

Coming soon:
Next weekend we have four riders in the classic Charlotteville ’50’.

Entries to consider for the weekend of 22/23 May include…

Saturday 22nd: Farnham RC ’10’ on the H10/8; Middlesex RC ’25’ on the H25/1; Sotonia CC ’10’ on the P613 (slowest 120 riders)
Sunday 23rd: Amersham RC club ’25’ on the HCC114 (EOL); VTTA (West) ’10’ on the U47b (pref. to VTTA West members)

Photos by Derek Reynolds from Monday’s ’10’. Top to bottom: Peter Cookson on the new rocket machine, Peter Dixon (keep that helmet along your back Peter) and me.

Westerley Evening 10m TT #2 – UPDATED

At the 2nd Westerley CC ’10’ at Hillingdon Hippy (25:42, PB) and Jayne (27:08) raised the bar. Jumbo was also cookin’ with a 28:14 – The Westerley CC result page (with lap splits) is here and Hippy’s report is  here. Tony Gibb won with a 22:45.

Snapped on Friday in central London – looks like a certain esteemed member of the Willesden CC is out campaigning on his battle-bike. Would that be a vote for the “green” party?

Thames Velo Road Race

I took part in the Thames Velo Road Race on Sunday on the Great Milton Circuit.

The race was quite steady and the course was quite wet from the rain the previous nights rain. I was quite settled in the middle of the bunch however was following a wheel and accidently end up in a break on the start of lap 2.

The break was caught quite quickly as the bunch reacted to the move. I wasn’t very well placed in the sprint and ended up starting my sprint from quite far back in the bunch but I managed to finish in the top 20.

Hopefully I am starting to get some fitness but it’s not quite there yet.

Track and time trials, weekend of 24/25 May UPDATED

Track

Saturday saw a group of WCC riders joining the first of three Prime Coaching track sessions at a sunny and warm Welwyn. WCC track supremo Tony Woodford and fellow coach Steve May put the 20 odd riders (some very odd riders) through their paces for two hours. The photos on this report were taken by Ian Why at the dedicated WCC session the week before.

<< I check my Garmin to check we’re still on course while Ray ‘Kelnago’ Kelly  gets ready to unleash the sprint that earned him the epithet “The Eternal Equal Seventh”. Jumbo, Roger and Jayne look on in amazement.

Plenty of club members have been to Welwyn over the last couple of weeks, so if you’re thinking of giving it a go, why not ask them about the experience.

It was sunny, hence the Reservoir Dogs look. >>

Time Trialling

Gill Reynolds reports:-
Saturday: Newbury RC 25, H25/1 – warm, windy (headwind out to first turn) Aldermaston.  Road very rough and full of potholes.
Brian Moon 1.12.49
Gill Reynolds 1.7.53
Jumbo James 1.7.23
Pete Cookson 1.3.38
Julia Shaw did a 55.33 (!!) – wind must have dropped for her.
Sunday: Norlond TT Combine 10, F1B/10: Looked like perfect morning – warmish and no wind.  However half an hour before start in began to rain and got colder.
Gill was 2nd lady with 25.52 – approached all the roundabouts with great caution. Pete Cookson was riding his new bike but said he could not control it in the rainy conditions and said that he was too cold – he ended up with  29.44.
Meanwhile… I rode an Amersham RCC club 10m TT this morning on the Great Missenden course (HCC180). It was cold and tipping down with rain but I recorded a season’s best 25:52 (a popular time this weekend) for second place from seven riders. I’m still cold. Blog post here.

Looking at the weekend of 15/16 May, I am entering the Hounslow and Dist Whs 10m TT on the H10/8 on the Saturday and the High Wycombe CC 25m TT on the H25/2 on the Sunday. There aren’t many events on the fast H25/2 ‘ski slope’ course this year, so I’d get an entry in if I was you. If you need more details, do get in touch.

Hillingdon Update

Ian Why gives us a sneak preview of what is shortly going to appear at the Hillingdon circuit!!

Posted in Miscellaneous | Leave a comment

Tuesday night circuit race – Hillingdon

John Williams and Richard Jerome both rode the E/1/2/3 race and Lance Woodman rode the 4th cat race.

The E/1/2/3 was very fast with an average speed nearing 28mph, one of the laps was an average of 32mph!

The strong winds also made it very hard for anyone to get near the front, Tony Gibb was riding like a motorbike at the front of the bunch.

John hasn’t got his new bike set up correctly yet and found himself running out of gears and was dropped towards the end of the race. Full results have not been published, however Richard Jerome finished in the top 20 somewhere.

Race report – 2nd Spring Omnium at Herne Hill

I went to Herne Hill on Sunday. I like Herne Hill – it has a serenity about it, off the track anyway. On the track it was a different matter.

There was a Women’s Omnium event, as well as A & B men and juniors, but as often is the way, only two women turned up – me and my mate, ace-sprinter, Cassie Gledhill. For the most part we were racing with the B category men ( for ‘men’ , read skinny, little, pushy VCL boys). As you gather from my tone, I didn’t do well. When I wasn’t being annihilated by Cassie, I was being forced on to the Cote d’Azure by the boys. I wasn’t feeling my best and I think I might have been paying the price for being a filthy show-off the day before at the WCC track training day at Welwn.

Cassie and I had one event on our own – the 500m sprint. She slowed down as we approached the finish as I had asked her beforehand not to embarrass me too much.

I managed to stay in the 20k scratch, held at the end of the day, which neither Cassie nor compulsive trainer and top Gragario, Mike Diggins managed to do. I was feeling quite pleased with myself until I realised that it was a ruse so they could do a ‘Yogi Bear’ on my provos!

Anyway, Cassie and I caught up on gossip, had a bit of a pedal, and burnt the tips of our noses, and Mike Diggins was relegated for carving up a foul-mouthed teenager.

So we all had a really lovely day!

Westerley CC crit- race report – UPDATED WITH PICTURES

UPDATE – Pictures available here

On Saturday, Willesden’s finest road racers took part in the Westerley CC crit held at Hillingdon circuit.

John Williams, Rich Cooper, Tom London, Peter Dixon and Richard Jerome were all present and with such a large WCC turn out the team were optimistic.

The race started with a few attacks but once the race settled down our lads were pretty comfortable. Pete Dixon was very active at the front of the race and the rest of the team were watching the moves very closely.

With 5 laps to go, Richard Jerome was planning to lead out Tom London and things were going well until the last lap when a rider came off around the bottom corner which caused chaos in the bunch.

The race was split into two with only Pete Dixon managing to stay in with the front bunch. Pete managed to claim 8th place in the sprint (well done Pete).

The rest of the race came in behind and Rich Cooper was the next best placed rider in roughly 15th position.

WLCA 25m TT on 2nd May

Dear Club TT Secretaries,
I apologise for the unsolicited e-mail but wonder if you could pass on details of this event to your members if you receive this today (19th April).
Entries for the WLCA 25 on 2nd May, to be held on H25/4 at Great Missenden, Bucks (HCC114 for those who have had club events there in the past), are due to close tomorrow and at present we have very few riders entered.  I am able to hold entries open until Thursday if anyone would like to enter the event.  All entries will get a ride, whether clubs are members of WLCA or not, but riders from unaffiliated clubs will not be eligible for awards.  The entry fee is £8.00 and entries should be sent on the CTT form to me at 10 Cubb Field, Aylesbury, HP19 7SH.
Please pass this on – many of you will appreciate the huge amount of work that goes into running an event and it is incredibly disappointing to have just over 10 names on the startsheet at present.
Kind Regards,
Andrew Cowburn

TT and track report – 17/18 April

What a weekend! The sun shone, the wind abated, it wasn’t like April at all.

Track
On Saturday the club hired Welwyn Velodrome for a couple of hours and invited members to try out the track. I guess there were 20-25 members there (seven of them complete track novices). Coaches Tony Woodford and Steve May put us through our paces with a variety of drills and competitions. The final 10 lap scratch race was dominated by multiple champion Jayne Paine after she pulled back an early break containing Brian Moon.

It was a great day – thanks to those who organised and supported it.

Time Trials
With Peter Dixon away competing in a demolition derby, it was time for some of the youngsters in the team to see if they could step up. It’s rumoured that Russel O’Malley has been TRAINING and Peter Cookson was caught by one of our spies taking delivery of a new Quest Quazar Helium Filled Nanotech TT Rig from The Bike Shop on Friday. These guys are taking it seriously.

On Saturday Russell and Peter rode the Farnborough and Camberley ’25’ on the Bentley course (H25/8) and returned times of 1:02:35 and 1:03:16 respectively. Chris James was a DNS as he had to see a doctor about a self-administered nose job (tho’ he did get to Welwyn for the track session later). The event was won by Steve Walkling (VC St Raphael) in 51:19.

Gill Reynolds rode the Oxford City RC ’10’ on the H10/17R in 26:30. The event was won by Stu Dodd (Drag2Zero.com) in 20:39.

On Sunday I rode up to a chilly Tempsford for the Bedfordshire RCC ’25’ on the notoriously hilly* F1B/25. On a wind-scoured day** I was pleased to return a season’s best of 1:02:04. The event (for the slowest 90 riders) was won by Tim Davies (Icknield RC) with a 55:54. I’ll post a report on my blog later.

Looking at the weekend of 8/9 May I will be entering the classic Charlotteville CC ’50’ (H50/8) on the Sunday. There’s a Farnham RC ’10’ on the Saturday (H10/8) and a Didcot Phoenix ’25’ (H25/17) as well.
