TT report – 19/20 June – UPDATED

Let me know if I’ve missed anyone.

Saturday
Gill Reynolds rode the Women’s National ’50’ Championships in Hampshire and did a season’s best 2:18:43. That’ll set a fair mark for the Veterans Cup. She also won a medal as the fastest in her age group. The event was won by Julia Shaw (Utag Yamaha.com) in a Competition record of 1:46:46.

Photo: Gill Reynolds riding a Harold Hill CC event on the E31

Ron Purdy rode the Farnham RC ’10’ at Bentley in 30:54 – three minutes faster than last year.

Brian Moon rode the Century RC ’10’ recording a 27:44.

I travelled to Monmouthshire to ride the Cwmcarn Paragon RC ’25’ on the Usk course and recorded a season’s best of 1:0:35. It was a bright day, but the headwind to the turn was tricky. The event was won by Ceri Pritchard (Planet X) in 50:24.

Sunday
Four of us rode the Farnham RC ’25’ on the Bentley course (H25/8). A cross wind made the going tough all the way round. Fastest Greenie on the day was Peter Cookson with 1:01:06. I recorded 1:03:01, Ludovica Bruno returned a 1:08:29 in her first TT of the season and Chris James did a 1:09:20. Fastest was Martin Williamson (London Dynamo) with 54:44.

Coming up…
On Saturday 10th July there’s a ’10’ on the fast P613/10 near Andover run by the Antelope RT. Check that it’s on that course before entering though – roadworks are threatened. There’s an East London Velo ’10’ on the E2/10 and a middle markers (slowest 120 riders) ’10’ run by Bedfordshire RC on the F1B/10.

Sunday 11th July looks a bit thin for opens. There’s a Westerley CC club ’25’ on the HCC114 at 8am and a Maidenhead & Dist CC club ’25’ on the HCC001 at 3pm (both EOL). I’m hoping to ride the National ‘100’ Championship that day if you fancy diverting the club run towards Norwich.

Willesden races at Hillingdon

The Ronster took these pictures at last Tuesday’s Hillingdon circuit races. It was good to see so many members there and an honour to see the road team – Richie “Fluff” Jerome, John Williams, Tom London and Jim Mackay – in action.

John, Richie, Tom and Jim establish a dominant position as the peloton heads out to the start. Rich Cooper is out of shot (in Ealing).
John Williams moves easily and swiftly through the bunch.
A tactically astute John Williams drifts an unknown Kenton RC rider off the back before heading forward to replenish Richie’s bidons. In the background is the new nuclear-powered clubhouse.
Tommeke London was always in contention in the 4th cat race. Jim Mackay lost contact late in the race, exhausted by his pre-race efforts to avoid Ray Kelly’s attempts to sell him a club jersey.
The peloton on the major climb of the day.

Richie Jerome wearing a sensible vest. Richie finished well in the E123 race.

Jayne Paine wins again

Jayne reports (with edit to protect the poor children):

Just a quicky as I am knackered quite tired after reading Track League this evening and haven’t been back long.

I won a circuit race on Thorney Island yesterday.

It was a very windy 8 laps, but as flat as a pancake, which suits me.

There were only 7 of us women altogether, so not the most glorious win, but never mind.

Track league was not so great tonight, but I did my best. I felt like someone had pressed the fast forward button on a horror-cycling movie.

Well done, Jayne.

Our night at the Hillingdon Tuesday Evening Circuit Race Series

Tomorrow night (Tuesday 14th June) is the Willesden CC edition of the Hillingdon Tuesday Night Circuit Race Series.

It would be great to get as many members as possible down there, preferably wearing club colours.
Come and cheer on the WCC road team as they strive to win. Some of our youths (second claim members) dominate their categories and the seniors have shown good form in the past few weeks.
You might be asked to help with signing on, carting stuff around or the like – but nothing too onerous. You’ll see some high class racing and might get to meet a paramedic or ambulance driver.
Racing starts at 6:30pm with the Youth of Today and will be followed by concurrent races for 4th cats and E123s at 7:15pm. Refreshments are available.
The circuit is in Springfield Road, Hayes, UB4 0LT. There’s plenty of parking and loos. I’m not sure if the new club house will be open, but it’ll be a chance to have a look at it anyway.

Hope to see you all there.

TT report – 12/13 June

Send me stuff and I’ll update this.

Sunday
Peter Cookson and Gill Reynolds rode the Team Axiom ’25’ on the Portsmouth Road (P885/25).  Pete did his best ride of the year, 59:25, and Gill did a 1:5:54. Apparently Pete thought it was a super day and Gill thought it was a terrible day and they were off only 4 minutes apart.  Gill says that it is a good course, although the 2 miles down hill start makes the next 3 miles uphill seem very hard. The event was won by Kevin Tye (Datateam Allstars) in 49:58.

I rode the Finsbury Park CC ’50’ and scored my first PB at a standard distance since 1983. A 2:03:08 beats my 1980 PB on the K16 by about a minute and a half. Chris James was a DNS Apols. The event was won by Brian Walker (Team Swift-Allsports) in 1:47:53. It was a cool day with some drizzle but not much breeze. Blog here.

Coming up
Last call for entries to the WLC ’50’ on Sunday 27th June – please let me know if you want to ride. The team so far is Brian Moon, Stuart Birnie, Peter Dixon and me. Richie Jerome can’t ride that day because he has a manicure appointment he can’t move. Rich Cooper might yet ride if he confirms. Where is John Williams? Who is Ray Kelly?

Saturday 3rd July sees a ’25’ at Bentley (H25/8) organised by the Charlotteville, a ’50’ on the fast E2/50C run by the Shaftesbury and a Prime Coaching session at Welwyn Track run by WCC Capo di Velodromo, Tony Woodford.

Sunday 4th July is the Hounslow and District Wheelers’ ‘100’ on the H100/8 (Froyle, nr. Bentley).

New BC Web site

Just checking the revamped BC Web site and came across this…

It’s tight at the top for the road championship.

UPDATE: It’s been pointed out to me that the championship may not be decided on a straight points count. Apologies.

TT report – 9/10 June UPDATED

Wednesday: John Williams has Facebook statused: “Westerly [Hillingdon Circuit] ’10’ – me 25:50, Tom London 25:41″.

I think that might be Tom’s first TT and John’s first ’10’. Those are good times for that course where the climbing adds up and the distance (actually 10.3 miles) adds a bit.

Thursday: Peter Dixon won the Maidenhead and District CC Club ’10’ on the H10/2 (Maidenhead Thicket). He PB’ed to win with a 21:55. On FB he said “Conditions not ideal to say the least”.

Paris-Roubaix Sportive and Chiltern 100

Tim Burrows reports:

This weekend I managed to complete ‘Roubaix’ with all it’s variable weather. It started with a head-wind, the first bits of pavé dry and dusty, then the skies truly opened up – thunder and lightening – the roads became rivers for a couple of hours. Me and the bike were black. Then the sun came out for the last hour and the wind swung round to the South for a cracking tailwind finish. I was doing 30-40kph for the last 20. I was budgeting on 11 -12 hours if it was a tailwind from start to finish. In diabolical conditions I managed to do 9h 41mins.

I can’t make up my mind if this or Ventoux were the best bike experiences of my life.

Well done, Tim. Stuart Birnie also finished and I’ve gleaned this from his FaceBook statuses…

4/6 – 07:53 – Leave for #Paris-Roubaix today.
4/6 – 12:32 – Bus is late. Balls.
4/6 – 15:44 – Dover. Late. 16.45 ferry now to wait for.
4/6 – 22:31 – Arrived. Dinner done. Beer fueling to commence. #Paris-roubaix
5/6 – 15:33 – Recce of the ride to the start done. Just another 20k on the 260k.
5/6 – 17:56 – Registered for #Paris-roubaix. Need to pack stuff onto bus now.
6/6 – 03:42 – 4.30am wake up for #paris-roubaix
6/6 – 08:08 – First checkpoint 82k. Average speed 32kph. #paris-roubaix
6/6 – 15:58 – Finished. Solo break ftw! #paris-roubaix
6/6 – 19:27 – Sitting down for dinner in Roubaix. 275k in around 12 hours with stops. Pave did less damage to me than Flanders. #paris-roubaix… I think it was just over 9hrs ride time. ~28kph for the 260k.
7/6 – 08:45 – On the way home from #paris-roubaix. Look tired, feel quite stiff and sore.

Cracking ride, Hippy.

Meanwhile Simon Wicks, Tom London, Rich “Mr 50” Cooper and John Williams were riding the Chiltern 100 Sportive which is largely a flat dual-carriageway course repeatedly climbs the Chiltern escarpment during its 107 miles. Simon reckons Whiteleaf Hill was the toughest amongst many tough climbs.

A pretty good weekend for WCC, all in all.

TT report – 5/6 June – UPDATED

Saturday
Peter Cookson did a 1:00:41 in the Oxonian CC ’25’ on the H25/17S for 20th place. David Johnson (VC10) won it in 55:28.

I rode the West London CA ’30’ at Bentley (H30/8) and recorded a PB of 1:12:44 for this increasingly rarely run distance –  a 3½ minute improvement on last year’s effort. The event was won by Julian Jenkinson (Utag Yamaha.com) in 1:2:33. It was a hot and not too breezy day.

Sunday
From FaceBook: “Peter Dixon smashes his PB with a 54:40 at the Hitchin Nomads 25 on the F1/25b to take 5th place. Jumbo did a detour and got 1:07:46.” That’s a stunning ride. Well done, Peter. Rob Weare (Leamington C&AC) won in 52:30.

Coming Up
Thinking about entering TTs for the weekend of 26/27 June?
Don’t forget that the WCC circuit racing championships are on the Saturday (including, I believe, a TT and TTT).
On Saturday 26th June there’s a middle markers Hertfordshire Whs ’10’ on the fast F20/10. There’s also a Newbury RC ’10’ on the H10/1.
On the Sunday there’s the WLC ’50’ starting at Great Missenden (entries for this to me please). There’s also a Hemel Hempstead ’25’ on the F13/25 and the ECCA ‘100’ on the E2/100C.

Cycling play at the Packet Boat Marina, Hayes

Gosh, a cycling play right on the door step of our beloved circuit at Hillingdon.
For one night only , Friday 18th June 2010, there will be a play about cycling.
The blurb on the company’s web site says….

“This pacy, poignant production celebrates cycling and its unusual partnership with socialism. Mikron’s talented team of four freewheelers, pedals its way through 100 years of history, charting the amazing story of the socialist cyclists of the National Clarion Cycling Club and the last day of business in a 21st century Manchester cycle shop. These two tales are interwoven with laughter, tomfoolery, rousing songs and sheer Pedal Power.”

It all starts at 7:30pm on the 18th June at the
Packet Boat Marina,
Packet Boat Lane,
Cowley
Uxbridge
UB8 2JJ

Web site is http://www.mikron.org.uk/pedalBlurb.php

Tickets £10 (£8 Concs) – you are advised to bring a chair or a blanket.

Thanks to Ray Kelly for spotting this.

TT mid-week update

Ian Piper writes:

I [ rode] a midweek 2 up 10 and rode with one of the people I train with. The event was the Weston Wheelers 2 up 10 mile TT on the U21/10 on the 26 May, Ian Hutchins (Somerset Road Club – Bicycle Chain) and I did a 22.44 which was good enough for second place behind M. Ashurst and T Lewis – Somerset Road Club – Bicycle Chain. I would like to say I was doing my fair share of the work but Ian was doing much longer and harder turns on the front than me but even so I was very pleased with the result as this was my first 10 in 7 years. It is probably the flattest and fairest 10 course I have ever ridden with the start and finish exactly opposite each other, next to no traffic and with the exception of the bridge over the M5 it was absolutely flat but then I should have expected that on the Somerset levels!

Meanwhile the vets were in action again. Gladys reports:

In the sweltering heat yesterday afternoon the London Vets held a 10 mile time trial on the Fifield course. It was touch and go as the workmen were filling in holes in Drift Road ready for the Windsor Triathlon. Gill Reynolds and Pete Cookson took the team award with a combined plus of 10:17. Pete was 3rd fastest Vet in 24:07, Gill finished in 27:10, Brian Moon 29:20 and Ron Purdy 33:37.

Tom in the points

Tom London (how come he gets his surname on the back of his shorts?) scored points in Tuesday night’s circuit race at Hillingdon. He was 7th in the fourth cat race behind winner Rubin Parker of the East Grinstead CC. I was a DNF in the same race.

Well done, Tom.

A bit of TT fun

We’ve had four West London Combine events so far and there are another four to go. Here are a couple of tables showing who’s the most consistent performer on actual and handicap positions. A win gets you 30 points, 2nd 29 and so on. It’s just a bit of fun – the sort of thing a TT Sec. does on a Bank Holiday Monday.

Fastest time

Rider #1:
10m
#2:
25m
#3:
25m
#4:
25m
Rides Points Rank
Peter Dixon 30 30 30 30 4 120 1
Simon Wicks 29 29 28 3 86 2
Stuart Birnie 28 28 29 3 85 3
Lance Woodman 27 26 26 3 79 4
Chris James 25 29 24 3 78 5
John Williams 25 25 2 50 6
Russell O’Malley 27 1 27 7=
Richard Jerome 27 1 27 7=
Jayne Paine 26 1 26 9
Brian Moon 23 1 23 10
Harmeet Dhiraj 22 1 22 11

Handicap time

Rider #1:

#2:

#3:

#4:

Rides Points Rank
Peter Dixon 30 28 30 29 4 117 1
Simon Wicks 28 30 28 3 86 2
Stuart Birnie 27 27 27 3 81 3
Chris James 25 29 24 3 78 4=
Lance Woodman 26 26 26 3 78 4=
John Williams 25 30 2 55 6

Richard Jerome 25 1 25 9
Brian Moon 23 1 23 10
Harmeet Dhiraj 22 1 22 11

So Peter, Simon and Stuart are dominating the podium places at the moment, but there are a few close battles further down the order. Will we see a late season charge from Brian in the handicap stakes? Will Rich Cooper, Ray Kelly and Tom London finally make their season debuts and shake up the top order?

Don’t be left out – make sure you get your entries in for the remaining events. The next one is the ’50’ on the new, super (a bit) fast(er) Great Missenden course on 27th June. If you’re not riding, the Combine is always on the look out for marshals and helpers. Please let me know if you’re willing to assist.

A win in West London Combine event #4 and other results. UPDATED

This was a 25 mile event on the HCC114 Great Missenden course. It was a cool and breezy day offering a brisk finish.

Peter Dixon was the star of the show with a new personal best time of 58:02 to win the whole event. The altitude training is paying off (he’s using the turbo in the loft).

John Williams, on a road bike, also recorded a PB of 1:9:32 win the club medal for fastest on handicap. The Jim Revill Trophy will go to Peter because John has not ridden the requisite two qualifying events. Peter will also get a medal for fastest rider and 2nd handicap. He’ll have to extend his trophy cabinet.

Stuart Birnie took the honours in the season long battle between him and Simon Wicks – both with course PBs I think. Stuart wins a club medal for 2nd fastest. Richie ‘Road Man’ Jerome found the scratch man tag a little heavy to bear and came back with a 1:5:40 – 5 seconds ahead of me on my full TT rig (blog).

Jumbo and Moony found the going tough but not, I suspect, as tough as Harmeet did riding her first race. Well done, Harmeet.

On Wednesday Gill Reynolds rode the CCBreckland ’10’ and recorded a 25:24. The event was won by G Rushmore (King’s Lynn CC) in 21:59.

If you missed it, there also a blog entry about Jayne Paine, Tony Flynn and Tim BurrowsWednesday night TT escapades at the Hillingdon Circuit.

Brian, Peter Dixon, Peter Cookson and I were entered for the Team Velo Sportif ’10’ on Saturday, but the event was cancelled because of dangerous conditions. Gill Reynolds‘ Saturday event was also cancelled, but today she rode the Spirit ’10’ at Milton Keynes in 26:22 to take the fastest lady award as well as 3rd vet’s prize on standard.

I’ll update this entry with any other results that come in.

Coming Up
Saturday 19th June has a Farnborough and Camberley ’10’ on the H10/8 (Bentley). I’m heading West to ride the Cwmcarn Paragon RC ’25’ on the R25/7 (if I get in. And – no – it’s not THAT Welsh course).

Sunday 20th June sees the Farnham RC ’25’ on the H25/8 (Bentley).
