Winter Series race 2

After last weeks reasonable weather, this week was more interesting with freezing temperatures, wind and lots and lots of rain!

The Rich C and Rich J were both mad enough to turn up, along with the other 30 or so competitors. The race stayed together despite several attempts to split the race up. The weather started to take its toll on the riders and legs were starting to get tired and the break aways were starting to get bigger and bigger gaps. Eventually a group of 4 got away in a soft move which didn’t contain any of the series contenders.

Our guy’s were hanging in there in the bunch and did well to stay with it in terrible conditions, lots of riders were complaining that their hands were too cold to change gear.

The remaining bunch sprinted for the remaining places with Richard J managing to finish 11th. Rich C also took part in the sprint however results are to be confirmed and will be updated.

We are still waiting to hear back from Lance as to how he got on in the 4th cat race.

New Years Day Parade in London

The Willesden are taking part as usual and as many members as possible are needed to go to London on the 1st January to join in the fun. All need to be in the new kit but if they don’t have it, Gladys will be bringing a stock of clothing to loan out.

The Parade starts from the Houses of Parliament at 12.00 noon. We are number 81 in the parade and the meeting point is in Milbank. Folk need really to be there by 11.30 am but certainly before noon.

There will be a club celebration at the end of the parade near to Green Park Station. Julie May will be providing the refreshments which will include the Willesden official drink of hot chocolate and Bailies.

We really need as many folk there as possible to make our entry a great success. Bring friends and relatives if you like. The main thing is that we need folk in kit on bikes. It really is a great way to kick off the new year. Parking is no real problem on New Years day-no congestion charge either. Of course, people may like to ride into London to get the miles in as the roads are quite clear.

Cheers

Ray

Winter racing.

Lance, Rich and Rich all took part in the winter series at Hillingdon circuit on Saturday.

Lance felt strong in the 4th cat race however a crash left Lance too far back to contest for top ten.

Rich Cooper was taking part in his first E/1/2/3 race and was strong and moved up the bunch througout the race. He finished comfortably in the bunch. Richard Jerome was well placed for the sprint however his legs cramped up coming across the line and he lost quite a few places. He thinks he may have just made it into the top 25 riders (result tbc).

Westerley Club Dinner

The Westerley would love to see their Willesden friends join them at their club dinner
It is a great end-of-season social gathering to be held at the Uxbridge Golf Club (same place we hold our club dinner) on Saturday, 29th November. Ticket cost is £20.
Please let Roland Collitcott know how many tickets you want (and feel free to bring as many guests as you like). He needs to provide numbers to the catering manager by the end of this week, although that number can be tweaked slightly in the following two weeks, however, he needs to have a reasonable estimate now. Please call him (preferably by email) your order, even if it’s only an estimated number of tickets. Here’s Roland’s details:

Final Time Trial of the season

The last time trial event of the season took place on Sunday. The Brighton Mitre C.C. 25 mile event had to be re-routed due to road works and was run over 2 laps of a hilly circuit. It was a cold, wet and windy morning and Pete Cookson was one of the early starters and finished in 1.17.22. Gill Reynolds, starting over an hour and a half later, managed to record 1.14.12 to gain the second fastest lady award.

Weekend riding

This weekend a splinter group of Willesden riders went on a club run…..8am from Denham. Why so early? The plan was to get back in time for their respective wives and parters to make sure they didn’t get in trouble.

It went so well that they are looking to do this every Saturday. If you would like to join them please email

2-Up TT and Hill Climb results

This weekend saw the Willesden combine with the Westerley RC for the annual 2-up time trial and hill climb.

The fastest time for the 10 miles was recorded by Dave Newman and Malcolm Woolsey (Westerley) in 23.40. Willesden’s pairings of Gill Reynolds and Pete Cookson finished in second place in 24.26, Chris James and Mike Jerome 27.53, Tony Woodford and Richard Woodford 29.35 and Ron Johnson and Rob Ross 29.40.

No-one from the Willesden took part in the hill climb which means we will have no Hill climb champion this year.

More fun this weekend….

They did it……..just!

The plan……

Race at MOD Chertsey in the morning, finish in the top 10 and go out for a nice pub lunch to celebrate. If not then head to Hillingdon for the afternoon and try again, but our lads don’t like doing things the easy way.

John Williams had a puncture half way in the race and had to pull out to save himself for the afternoon race, whilst Rich Cooper went a bit too early and had to settle for 12th place whilst nearly wrecking his legs in the process.

Things were looking bad, including John’s tube replacing skills but after a brief lunch and some recovery drinks they were back in action at Hillingdon and John managed 5th place and Rich managed 8th place both securing their 3rd cat licences for next year. An excellent result for both of them considering the earlier efforts.

Well done!!

Last weekend of Road racing

This weekend see’s both Rich Cooper and John Williams attempt to gain their 3rd cat licences.

Richard has 9 points and John has 8 points and both need to make it to 10 to make it to 3rd cat. They both have plans to race at MOD Chertsey on Saturday morning as their final race. However of they don’t make it then they will be racing another event at Hillingdon later on in the day.

Good luck!!!

Results Round up

I have just managed to get some of the results from our Track Championships held at Calshott last weekend. The winner was Simon Wicks and the Ladies Champion Jayne Paine. Our 2nd claim members, who are in the Hillingdon Slipstreamers until they reach the age of 16, rode brillantly. Dan Maslin and Stephanie May showed the adults how speedy they were.

Ed Packard made a return to racing after a 5 week layoff due to health problems and rode the East Anglian 25 on Sunday finishing with a 1.01.12. Gill Reynolds was the 2nd fastest lady with 26.33 in the West London C.A. 10 mile near Oxford in which Pete Cookson recorded 24.19.

Liz Creese ran an Autumn Assortment Audax event from Ruislip in which over 60 riders took part covering distances of 50Kms, 100 kms or 200 kms.

On a sad note. Over 100 people from local cycling clubs attended the funeral of Gwyn Doel on Thursday. She was a long time member of the club and was well known throughout West London for her famous chocolate sponge cakes.
