LONDON WALES LONDON ENTRIES OPEN 16 SEPTEMBER

Willesden’s thriving audax organisation continues to develop with new events being added to the long distance calendar all the time. And the popularity of events like London Wales London mean that the club is getting mentioned in national media such as a Guardian Blog.

Entries for the increasingly popular 400km LWL open on 16 September. Last year the event sold out in 8 hours but organiser Liam FitzPatrick promises that there will always be a space for WCC members who want to have a go. The ride is one of the qualifiers for Paris Brest Paris which runs in 2019 and which has traditionally had a large showing from the club.

Other audax events coming up include Ian Oliver’s 300km ‘Three Down’ on 8 September and the well established Autumn 100km and 200km rides from Chalfont St Peter on 13 October, run by Martin Lucas.

WCC members are always welcome as helpers at the start and finish of events; if you have some free time contact the relevant organiser who will bite your hand off!

Lexi Cinema – Willesden

The Lexi Cinema in Willesden will be screening the new documentary about David Millar, called ” TIME TRIAL” at 6:30pm on Thursday 19th July 18.

This is a once-off screening of the film and it will also include a pre-recorded Q&A with David and the film’s director afterwards.

David Millar having excelled in cycling at the highest level was then  found guilty of doping and punished with a 2 year ban. He returned as a spokesperson for clean cycling, and he helped to set up Team Sky in 2010.  David is an articulate, intelligent character, and this documentary was conceived of to record his valedictory year – 2014 – where he rode in the season’s big races before he retiring at the age of 37.

A mini camera was fitted to his handlebars, and the film makers got permission to film from the heart of the peloton during races, providing great insight!  When a fading Millar is dropped from the Tour de France squad, though, the documentary is presented with a more interesting narrative:  Millar is seen wrestling with his sense of waning power, and the humiliation of failure.

The film has an 18 certificate and lasts just over 80 minutes.

The Lexi is a small and beautiful cinema in Kensal Rise, Willesden.

Address – 194b Chamberlayne Road, London NW10 3JU

Nearest Public transport

Overground:  Kensal Rise Station (3 mins walk)
Tube:  Kensal Green (10 mins walk) – Bakerloo line. Willesden Green (20 mins Walk) Jubilee line

Parking : On street parking in nearby streets

This Weekend – John Morris Fun Charity Ride

John Morris 2018

This coming Sunday sees the running of the 30th Annual Charity Cycle Ride! This family fun event is organised each year by John Morris and is a great day out for cyclists of all types and abilities. This is a great event and has always been well supported by members of the Willesden Cycling Club?

John Morris’s route varies slightly each year, but it is always a wonderful route with at least two excellent stops along the 30 mile course.

It starts at 10.00 am on 24th June at from The Plough public house, Winchmore Hill, Bucks (Map), where you can sign on and also make a donation to this year’s charity, which is The Thames Valley Adventure Playground for children and adults with special needs in Taplow.

The Thames Valley Adventure Playground provides a chance for children and adults with all types of special needs to enjoy the fun, freedom and friendship afforded by the opportunity to play and share experiences in a safe and stimulating environment. This includes wheelchair-accessible roundabouts and swings, elevated walkways, allowing someone with profound and multiple difficulties to enjoy the excitement of ‘climbing’ trees, multi-sensory rooms to stimulate and relax, with specially-trained staff to provide help and support.

Remembering Pauline Why

LAS - Pauline

Ian Why has contacted me to say that if people would rather make a donation to charity in lieu of flowers then the family have chosen The London Air Ambulance charity.

After Pauline’s funeral there will be a collection box when we gather at the Bowls club, or donations can be made direct to the charity via the The London Air Ambulance (Charity no 801013)  donations page on their website.

Anne’s Audax’s

The 3rd of June dawned bright and sunny for the annual 10 Bridges and Kaf 2 Kaf Audax events. Brevet cards, entry forms, route sheets and validation stickers all ready for the hoped vast crowds of on the line entries. At the beginning all that could be seen was a sea of red and black Maidenhead Cycling Club, Where was the green of Willesden? However that soon appeared with many Willesden members riding the 64km route.

Ray Kelly devised an off road route for the Kaf 2 Kaf which was definitely the high (or low point) of the ride for many.  We had 55 riders on the 10 Bridges and 14 on the Kaf 2 Kaf. It was hot day with temperatures in the high 20’s. It was even hot sitting in the shade. A good day was had by all.

Thanks to everyone who rode and supported the event. Special thanks to David Dyer for bringing along about a dozen of his riding buddies from MCC . From me a big thank you to John Tipping who was my right hand man all day and also to Mick Hill and Ian Oliver who helped at the busy times. I hope this event has wetted your appetite for more Audax rides, the next one is organised by Ian Oliver and is on 1st July.

Anne Mograby

am1The many of the Maidenhead!
