Great night for the Willesden Team in our own promotion at the Circuit with 4 riders in the 3/4 race; they were the team of the night. Early attacks off the front of the race by Tony Lusardi was followed by Connor Woodford getting away with two other riders after 5 laps had been completed. With his three team mates taking care of any further escapes Connor stayed away for the rest of the race to finish 2nd on the night. Darryl Lusardi, Tony Lusardi and Ryan Finestone all finished in the bunch. Josh Copley once again showed what a great prospect he is in the youth race staying up front for the whole race in the lead group.
Provisional results from Mark Brooking
Marcus Jackson Baker – 375 miles
Jane Moore (Formerly Jane Swain) – 310+ miles
A tough course – more so for the trikes.
Winner Jonhathan Schubert – 516 miles.
Willesden Fun Day at Hillingdon Circuit arrive at 13.00. Fun races for all the family starting at 13.30 and bring along a picnic. All ages welcome if you are not riding you can watch or help.
22 women
I thought I had done a cracking 500m but it wasn’t that good – 41.67s (8th).
Ellie Coster came 1st with 37.73s and Janet Birkmyer (4th) 40.15 .
Points Race – lots of attacks from the endurance girls. It kind of made it difficult to know what to do. I only managed to get points (3) on the second to last sprints, but this was good enough for 8th.
Miracle of miracles this put my standing at 4th overall , so I couldn’t get worse than 4th in the sprints. And against the sprinters 4th is what I got, although I would like to think that going for a ‘long one’ (with a very good push from Graham Mitchell!) shook them up a little.
Then the pursuit – 4 laps of whatever Welwyn track is – probably 1850m ??
I came 2nd with 2.33.20 to Niki Kovacs (Brixton) with 2.32.63 . Janet came about 5th I think with 2.35.23.
With just the scratch to go –
Ellie Coster – 7
Janet Birk – 15
Hannah Blount – 18
Me ————–20
Niki Kovacs – 23
Chris Robson 26
Sophie Black –32
Then all the rest
Scratch 18 laps
I launched an attack down the banking fairly early on and a VCL girl caught me and we worked together for probably about 6 laps before aborting.
At the recent Newbury RC 12 Hour TT Stuart Birnie set a distance of 293.63 miles, finishing with a second place podium position. Hippy said on Facebook “Looks like I finally put that 12hr record to rest…”. Chapeau Hippy!
Willesden CC will be holding the next Rocco Memorial Ride on Sunday 20 July. The route will follow the famous Bluebell Ride.
The Event HQ will be the traditional start point for Rocco’s Audax events, Manor Farm Ruislip. However, this will not be an Audax event.

Tony Willard has sent through some further details for the Hampshire (+Berkshire+Wiltshire) ride on Saturday 26 July.
The ride will start at 09:00 from Oakley Schools, Oakley Lane, RG23 7JZ. The outward route will take in Ramsdell, Baughurst, Brimpton, Crookham, Burghclere, Woolton Hill, Ball Hill, Kintbury and Hungerford. Cafe stop at the Tutti Pole, next to the Kennet and Avon canal.
After refreshments the return route will include Shalbourne, Oxenwood, Vernham Deane, Upton, Hurstbourne Tarrant, and Overton, finishing at Oakley for a caffeine top-up at Jolly Ollys coffee shop. Total distance 60 miles, pace around 15 mph.
There is also expected to be the option for a shorter ride for any that want it, with the Oakley Pedalers Foundation Group. This will be a 40 mile round trip at a relaxed pace, also finishing at Jolly Ollys.
In order to give Tony an idea of numbers, please let your Club Captain know if you can make either ride: wheatleyjk (at) gmail (dot) com.
Two Willesden riders, Marcus Jackson-Baker and Jane Moore, are taking part in this weekend’s
R.T.T.C National Championship 24 hour time trial, being held over several circuits centred around Hailsham in Sussex. Jane, on a trike, is in with a good chance of a VTTA medal. Marcus will be riding his normal steel Audax bike, though he’s removing the mudguards and saddlebag for the event, so it will be interesting to see how his time compares against riders on bling TT machines.
Good luck to you both. Forza Squadra Verde!!
We’ll be running three Audaxes from Jenners Cafe at Maidenhead on 6th July. They are a 200km ride, a new route called the Jack Eason Struggle, and what were formerly Mick Hill’s 10 Thames Bridges and Kaf-to-Kaf rides, at 8am, 9am and 10am respectively.
The Kaf-to-Kaf is now called the Jack Eason Giggle and at 62km (38 miles) and pretty flat is well suited as a first Audax
Full details are available on the club site
This week the trackies have been taking the limelight. On Friday at Welwyn Connor Woodford made several attacks in the B group 10 lap scratch race, It all came together on the final lap and uncle Roger came through to win. The next race was a 10 lap block handicap in which Roger came 2nd. The final B group race was a Devil and both Connor and Roger stayed on the front and with 3 laps to go Connor took a lead which he held to the finish. This was Connor’s first senior race win and he is still under 16. Roger’s good results in the past few weeks means he is now promoted to the A League.
Ed Packard has been turning in some personal best times. Last weekend he rode in the Plomesgate 25 recording 1.02.38. The Johnny Morris annual charity ride is a bit of a Willesden CC tradition. It is a fun day out on a bike, peppered with good stops ranging from Golf Clubs to pubs… well mainly pubs.
As usual the event is organised by John “Johnny” Morris of the Wembley Road Club and the Pickwick Bicycle Club. This John has chosen the Thames Valley Adventure Playground as his nominated charity for this ride. The marked route is a pleasant ride of about 35 miles through quiet lanes around Winchmore Hill, near Amersham (not the one in in North London!!).
The ride starts and finishes in The Plough in Winchmore Hill. This pub does excellent food and their early morning cappuccinos are wonderful .

The French are far more red blooded than us Brits. We have “Cycling Weekly”, but the French call their cycling magazine “Cyclo Passion”. Oh la la!
Ray Kelly has just been leafing through some old copies of “Cyclo Passion” and found some photos of the Willesden in the October 1995 edition.
Ray says “Willesden stars sharing a page with Miguel Indurain and Tony Rominger!”. ” Inside the same magazine, there is a great photo of Liz with Rocco from the PBP of that year.”
Time again for the Fun Day on the 28th June. Arrive at Hillingdon Circuit at 13.00. Bring a picnic!
Fun races start at 13.30 for all the family.
Helpers and timekeepers are very welcome!
Here are edited highlights of both Tom’s and Janye’s Smithfield Nocturne races . Tom is featured at 6:35 and Jayne can be briefly seen at 9:47.
A full one hour programme of the meeting will be broadcast as follows –
Sky Sports 2: Tuesday 10th June, 10pm
Eurosport: Friday 13th June, 7.30pm
Channel 4: Saturday 14th June, 5.30am
Wow, wow, wow!! What a great weekend it was.
Tom Zittel won the Brooks Retro Criterium before a huge, noisy and excited crowd at Saturday night’s Smithfield Nocturne. Tom was riding a treasured early 1960s Claud Butler Super Torino, which was just about old enough to be his granddaddy! He narrowly missed a spill in the closing stages of the race but won by a vast distance over the second placed rider. The victor’s spoils were a bottle of bubbly a rather natty Brooks back pack. Tom filmed the entire race, which you can watch here.
Jayne Paine also rode in the the Nocturne, taking part in the penultimate race of the night, the Elite Women’s Criterium. It was a very high paced race and Jayne pulled out to save herself for Sunday’s National Masters Road Race Championships in Bedfordshire, which was due to start in less than 12 hours time! This proved to be an excellent strategy as Jayne picked up a silver medal, just missing out on gold by the shortest of margins. Jayne described the race as “Brutal….. it was just brutal!!”.
The whole weekend was rounded off by a big gathering of the Willesden in Willesden for a screening of the film “Pantani: The Accidental Death of a Cyclist” at the super little Lexi cinema in Kensal Rise.
This is just a stop press to pass on the good news and to congratulate Tom and Jayne on they fantastic achievements. More detailed reports to follow.
