WIllesden October Audaxes

Saturday 14th October brings the start of the new Audax season, kicking off with the Nyctophobic 100km and Anfractuous 200km from ride HQ at Chalfont St Peter near Denham with wooded Chiltern lanes and rolling downs galore.

The routes head west to the Waterside Café at Benson via Christmas Common, then whilst the Nyctophobic turns for home the Anfractuous heads west to the rolling downland of Wantage and Lambourn before heading home. In fact there are two versions of the Anfractuous, the regular route and an extended and officially hilly AAAnfractuous.

Full details and online entry, available to everybody via the Audax UK website.

RIVERSIDE TO RIVERSIDE RIDE – LAST WEDNESDAY

Anne Mograby, with the help of Mick Hill and John Tipping put on a very enjoyable ride last week, along with the weather.

“Wednesday, August 16th was a dry and mostly sunny day, unlike the previous Wednesday, so all looked good for Riverside to Riverside Audax ride from Maidenhead to Benson.    47 riders set off from Jenner’s cafe, which was great for a mid week event.   All but one finished well within the time allowed.

CIMG1230 (1)CIMG1233 CIMG1237 CIMG1241

Good to see a dozen or so Willesden members riding the event.  A big thank you to Annie and Ian Birch who persuaded some Hillingdon Triathletes to forgo running and swimming and stay on the bike.  Thanks also to Graham Haysom for persuading several of the Redhill CC to join us.    Anne Mograby”

Thanks Anne, Mick and John for once again organising such a brilliant day.

Marshals for WCC road races

We will need a lot of help with marshalling the road races on 24 September.  I expect we will have a number of Accredited Marshals on the day, but the circuit will need additional marshals to ensure the safety of the races.

Details of the course etc are shown in the earlier post. Please let me know if you are available to help.

Thanks,  John Wheatley

Riverside to Riverside Ride – Wednesday 16th August

1 ride – 2 cafes, 1 river

Many of you may know this ride, previously organised by Mick Hill and John Tipping.   It really does show the best of 3 counties Berkshire, Bucks and Oxfordshire.   Starting at Jenner’s cafe there are a few ups at Marlow and  Turville before the great descent down to Watlington.   The ride goes through some pretty villages before half way stop at the riverside in Benson.   The second half of the ride takes you across open farmland at Ipsden and visits the  Maharajah’s Well at Stoke Row.   Going through Henley sees you on the home strait back to Maidenhead via Knowl Hill,  Fifield and the Fat Duck in Bray.

Happy to take entries on the line.  A cheap day out £4 to Audax/ CTC members.

Race History and Trophies

The Willesden Cycling Club was founded in 1927 and our annual road race day is one of the premier events in our calendar. On race day we will have two trophies to contest, they are –

The “John Walker” Trophy

This is a E/1/2 Road race and is the main event of the day.

The winner will have their name engraved on the the prestigious and impressive trophy, which is a salute to a much loved club member, Mr John Walker.

John Walker was a great wit and raconteur in the Willesden CC and for many years he was the Master of Ceremonies at our annual club dinner. John was an avid jazz fan and his bike was badged up as a Stan Getz to honour the great American jazz saxophonist. John was also a creative and artistic person who had a talent for airbrushing incredibly intricate and dark satanic designs on to custom motorbikes.

Top 10 for Copley in Nationals

unnamed

Second claim member Josh Copley rode the Junior National Road Race recently. Here is the report via Catford CC:

National Junior Road Race
On Sunday 16th a CatfordCCEquipe/Banks junior team of Josh Copley, Ieuan Woods and Hector Corey rode the National Junior Road Race near Wallingford, as a bonus our headline sponsor Jeff Banks CBE presented the prizes on the day! Here Josh reports on the event from his perspective which culminated in a fine top 10 position against the best Juniors in the country:

This year three CatfordCC Equipe/Banks riders lined up in Wallingford the start of the Junior National Road Race Championships, with a field of 120 riders. It was also the first time all three of us had ridden as this group of three, but we had all raced with each other at National Level before. The course consisted of six laps; 4 short ones which had a long testing hill/drag, then two longer laps which had a steep hill in. The total race distance was 72 miles. The race rolled out and what followed was the most uneasy 5 miles I have ever ridden, even as a neutralised zone. Normally the riding is close but uneventful, this time however all manner of things happened. From proper crashes to complete wheel blow outs which sounded like shot guns going off, all of which was accompanied by a lot of shouting at each other and the occasional insult as people tried to stay upright! Once away on the course Ieuan Woods tried an early attack just before the first time up the first drag, unfortunately this was closed down by the peleton. Hector Corey and myself waited a little longer before trying to make moves. After the 3rd time up the shorter hill I decided to attack, just after the feed. I was joined by two others shortly after. My group made it over to the break forming a group of six. We worked together well. Ieaun and Hector closing down moves from the main group. My group completed a lap of the short loop and the first lap of the long loop before being caught by a group of favourites about eight strong. Over the last climb a small group of favourites attacked. I had just pulled off the front and was unable to follow this move, later was told by Paul Dole (the Commissaire driver) it was my one mistake of the race and cost me! I was part of the second group over the last climb. The run into the line was fast and twisty. One rider attacked with five miles to go, he had played us all telling us he was spent for the last ten miles! I found myself in third wheel with one kilometre to go, and waited until three hundred metres before launching my sprint from second wheel (the picture above shows just how close the finish for 8th place was. I came away with 2nd in my group giving me 9th on the day. Glad to walk away with a top 10 at the national champs. I was completely spent at the end, Jeff Banks ended up popping into Costas just to get me some water. Very tough day out. Lots of encouragement at the road side, a real testament to Wallingford and the local community for being able to put on a bike race.

A Ride to Remember Tim – Sunday 16th July

Earlier this year we lost Tim Wainwright, a highly respected and loved member of our club.  Tim lived in Sanderstead, Croydon and rode many miles though the lanes of Kent. His great friend and riding companion, Mark Green, is inviting us all over to Kent on Sunday 16th July for a ride through the lanes that Tim loved.

The ride will be about 80 miles long but there will opportunities to cut it short if you wish. It will be social ride run at a speed to suit the group. Mark has put a great route together and it will be a real treat for those of not familiar with riding over the that side of London!

We will meet at Sanderstead station at 9:30am. The station has car parking and is less than 30 minutes away from Victoria by train. Mark is planning to make the first stop at Lullingstone to admire the lilac fields. From there we will then head along Pilgrims Way to Otford and then on to Plaxton, Wateringbury and then finally to Rochester where we will make the turn for home. We will be passing tea rooms and pubs along the route so we should have plenty of opportunity for refreshment.

It will be good to have some idea of numbers so could you either leave a comment or leave or a “like” on the Facebook posting here

Warmest regards, John Davies

SUPER STAR JAYNE PAINE WON ANOTHER GOLD MEDAL

Fantastic news!

Jayne won the UCI Tour of Cambridgeshire Gran Fondo on Sunday 4 June.

She smashed it and recorded the fastest chip-time out of all the women – 3 hours 23 minutes 42 seconds.   There were 54 women in her age group 50-54.  She says it was 90 miles of windy hell and said she latched on to some very good wheels!  We all know how hard she races and I suspect others were trying to latch on to her wheels.

Jayne has well and truly qualified for the Worlds in Albi in August.

Chapeau Jayne
