Helping at Willesden’s Centenary Audaxes
We are running five Audaxes during the rest of the Audax year which ends 30th September. If someone completes our events at four distances (200, 300, 400, 600km) they win an award of a cap and badge. Our first two 200s have already been and gone. If you help you get a centenary cap (retroactive for helpers at the Willy Warmer and Boat Ride).
The other reward is helping fellow cyclists turn what can be a gruelling day into an experience to cherish. You’ll see riders arriving with a thousand yard stare. Food, drink and a warm welcome and in five minutes they are cheerfully chatting away about the day’s adventure.
Helping is a mix of catering to the riders at the start and finish or checking riders at an intermediate control or at the end. If you have never helped before the organiser is on hand to help. Friends and family are very welcome and will get a cap too..
The events: Contact details are at the end.
The next event is Mark Brookings Waltham Wanderer 300 11th April. Two additional people to help with food and checking-in required at Waltham Abbey. This will be from 7pm until the bulk of riders have returned, probably around 11pm.
London Wales London (LWL) on 2nd/3rd May, run by Liam FitzPatrick, is our flagship event. It starts at 6am from Chalfont St Peter. Help is welcome at the start, Islip near Oxford, Chepstow, Lambourn and the end. If you have been on the Riccione trip you can still help at the end The timing is:
- 5am – 630 at Chalfont on the Saturday
- Breakfast time at Islip, near Oxford
- Teatime at Chepstor
- Late evening at Lambourn
- Overnight at Chalfont (midnight to 1000am). We are not expecting helpers to work a full shift at the end.
The next event is my Bare Bones 400 on May 23/24th. It’s LWL without TLC for keen riders who cannot get an LWL place. (LWL is the Audax version of an Oasis concert). I would like one person to help at the start in Chalfont St Peter and one to check riders through the first control, a cafe in Woodstock.
The roles can be combined with me giving you a lift both ways if you like. 6am-7am at Chalfont, 830-1115 or the last rider if driving with me, or 1000 if not.
My 600 Last Gasp finishes at Kings X St Pancras on Sunday 4th July. Help is only needed at the end. The finish will be at a pub in St Pancras Station called the Betjeman Arms. It has an indoor terrace alongside Eurostar Trains and an outside terrace with a great view of the station front. When you visit the loo you walk past dining rooms that look set for a Midland Railway board meeting of 1910.
I will start things up and hope to hand over to a relay of members plus family and mates drinking and eating from about midday to mid-evening. In between you will need to sign riders in,hand out awards and have a chat with those who stop to have a drink and a bite – most do. Detailed instructions will be available and I will come over at some point in the evening to see in the back markers and wrap things up.
The final event is Paul Stewart’s 200 Anfractious on 26th September from Chalfont St Peter He will want some help for the 8am start and during the evening, at the finish.
