Can anyone help Dan Duncan-Jones?

I’m emailing to ask whether I can get assistance from the club:

I became a statistic a few weeks ago (although I’m not sure if anyone is keeping stats ), when I shot over the handlebars of me bike, while cycling through Hemel Hempstead industrial area. It was in Three Cherry Trees Lane, but I don’t suppose you’ll be that familiar with this little stretch. I suffered the usual cuts and bruises and was off the bike for 6 weeks and on painkillers for about 3 weeks. Luckily, I broke my fall with my forearm, elbow, shoulder and chest and didn’t hit my face or head.

I’ve been laising with solicitors via the CTC and they’ve said I might have a good case (we’ll see) against Hertfordshire Council, but if I can get other people to confirm what I say about the hazard, it could make quite a difference.

It happened on the 16th February and the hole came at the end of some wonderful newly laid tarmac, which I was marvelling at until I came to a crashing halt. The contractors, for reasons best known to themselves didn’t complete the job and left a section without tarmac, but thoughtfully left a lump at the edge of the hole (see attached photo) that was/is stuck fast to the road. This is what I hit and the combination of the hole, plus the lump of tarmac wrenched the handlebars from my grasp and that was that. The solicitor told me to measure the hole as it didn’t look that deep, so I got the spirit level out to show him.

Would you or anyone else be willing to make some kind of statement about the hazard? I’ve been checking it every now and again and by the 30th March, it still hadn’t been repaired. I’m going to ride past there tomorrow to see if they’ve finished the job yet.

All the best,

Dan Duncan-Jones

Bespoked: UK Hand-built Bike Show

Bespoked201410

Yesterday Raymond and I went along to Bespoked, the UK hand built bike show at the Olympic Velodrome. The place was packed with the best and most beautiful of cycling. I would really recommend going along if you can either today or tomorrow. You can grab tickets here, and if you go tomorrow you can also watch the Willesden Track Session from 1:30!

There are more photos on Triangle Cyclery’s blog as well.

Result: Herne Hill Spring Omnium 2 2014

Herne Hill Velodrome Wall

After what seemed like a long winter I signed up for my first race of the season.

Herne Hill hold a couple of Spring Omnium’s and I made it out to the second one this year. With the sun shining and a blue sky it was a perfect day to be outside on the track. There was a fairly large field of ‘B’ riders to contend with and being my first omnium and first race at Herne Hill I was fairly anxious to get on the track.

First up was a 10-lap scratch, which I managed a 5th after being poorly placed in the last lap. That’s a good start!

After the usual wait for the next event was the 2 lap Dash. I crossed the line 4th just missing out a ride in the Dash Final later on.

Next up was the Devil, which I was really looking forward to. With such a large field two riders would be called out each lap. The first few laps I tucked myself into the middle of the bunch but as I found myself boxed in I decided to try and ride from the back & come over the top of the group each lap. The tactic paid off, on the bell lap I found myself on the front with a small gap! However, after so many sprints my legs were shot and the three riders left in the race came around me. That was fun and I managed 4th!

A 9 lap Points race followed, I picked up two or three points which I was very happy with as I have never done terribly well in this event.

The last event was a 20k scratch race for all the senior riders, which didn’t count toward the omnium. This is always a hard one with very high pace near the end. Three ‘B’ riders were left when I was dropped with about 20 laps remaining. A group of eight finished with a half lap advantage over the bunch. It was a really exciting race to watch.

Prizes were given to the top three riders in each category and the 20k. A very well organized day of racing, I had loads of fun and picked up my first BC points and 5th place overall.

Result!

Westerly Evening Time Trial Series

Westerly Cycling Club Time Trial

The Westerley evening time trail series at Hillingdon starts on April 9th & takes place at 7:15pm on alternate Wednesday evenings April to August.

The races are 11 laps of the mile circuit (10.35 miles in total). An electronic timing system is used which, as well as very accurate times, gives other details such as lap breakdowns / average speeds.

Everyone is welcome. If you have not been before, turn up around 7 to sign on, or a bit earlier if you’d like to do a couple of warm-up laps. If you’ve not time-trialled before, Hillingdon is a good place to give it a go as it is a smooth surface without the distraction of cars whizzing past your right elbow. You don’t need any special equipment to give it a try. In fact they get a wide variety of bikes and riders

More information and Online Entry

Road bike only events
This year, in addition to the normal series, there are three additional events which are for road bikes only. No time trial bikes, or adaptations such as aero bars, pointy hats or disc / deep section wheels (>30mm), are allowed.

There will be £50 prizes for the fastest riders (both men and women).

More info here.

Pub Run: Weds 7 May

Club members at the pub run in April 2014

Hi folks

We had a strong turnout with at least 15 members coming along for the inaugural pub run last Wednesday! Good to see so many of you, and we just about recognised each other without the Lycra.

Since it is proving popular, Pub Runs will continue on the first Wednesday of the month, in Ickenham at the Coach and Horses pub.

You are warmly invited to come along and have a chat and a drink with your fellow club mates. (If you’re arriving hungry, food is served until 10pm.)

Hope to see you there…

🙂

CZ x

Event: Pub Run
Date: Weds 7 May 2014, and every first Wednesday of the month thereafter
Time: 8:00pm onwards
Venue: Coach and Horses Pub, 1 High Road, Ickenham, Middlesex UB10 8LJ
Enquiries: social@willesdencyclingclub.org.uk

p.s. I haven’t had any alternative suggestions on venue, so we will continue in Ickenham until someone in town proposes a central venue for a more easterly version. (I do still feel it would be good to alternate the locations, with every other gathering happening a bit further into town, for members who can’t get to Ickenham, so ideas are very welcome.)

“Olympic” Velodrome Reccy

Yesterday I did a reccy to find out what the trip would be like to get to the Lee Valley Velodrome using public transport.

Getting to Stratford was easy enough, but on the WCC track day there will be engineering works on part of the London Overground service to Stratford until 12:30pm. This is unfortunate as the London Overground has good provision for taking (track) bikes.

The signposting to the velodrome from Stratford station could be improved, as could my navigation skills, and I ended up taking a long way round to the track.

The trick seems to be to get on to the first outdoor level of the Westfield Mall when as soon as you leave Stratford station and then use “Jamie’s Italian” restaurant as a landmark (see rough map below). From there leave the shopping mall and get onto Westfield Avenue. Then walk along Westfield Avenue in a northerly direction. Then turn right into Olympic Park Avenue. When the Velodrome is clearly in sight turn left into Eton Manor Walk.

Allow at least 15 minutes to walk there from the station.

Car parking at the velodrome is limited with provision for perhaps around 100 cars. I am told you can park at Westfield’s car park for £8 all day at the weekend, so you may be able to drop off your bike and gear at the track then park at Westfield if there is no space at the velodrome, but allow plenty of time to do this.
