This third reliability trial of the series starts and finishes at the Hemel Hempstead CC Club House in Nash Mills recreation centre, near Kings Langley, Hemel Hempstead, for location map see www.hemelcycling.org.uk/about/general-information/find-clubroom. This is a very attractive but testing route through the Chilterns which travels out through Chesham, Wendover and Chinnor returning through Speen, Gt. Missenden, Chesham, Kings Langley and back to the club house with refreshments. It is a hilly circuit climbing some of the well-known Chiltern Hills of Chinnor and the notorious 1 in 4, Small Dean Lane, a killer but mercifully short, also Frith Hill is included in the route. The 50 km route option turns short of Wendover returning through Chesham

This is the sixth and last event of the Chiltern Classics Reliability Rides for 2014. The route commences from the village hall in Edlesborough and travels through Slapton before turning south back through Ivinghoe to climb Ivinghoe Beacon.
From Ringshall, the route continues through Little Gaddesden and Nettleden to Potten End where it makes it’s way onto the A4251 south of Berkhamsted before heading out through Bovingdon and Chesham. Passing briefly through Chesham town centre, the route heads towards Great Missenden on the B485 before taking to the lanes again through The Lee, St Leonards & Cholesbury before dropping down Hastoe Hill into Tring. From there, the route picks up the B489 through Marsworth before heading back through Aldbury so as not to miss out the delights of Tom’s Hill. Finally, once more over the Beacon from the easier side before dropping back down to the HQ for a well earned cuppa. 61 miles in all and about 1,000m of climbing.
Signing on commences from 8.30 am.
The beer, the bonk, the bacon and egg bagel – all the drama of Hippy’s 24hour TT world championship win is now available on Hippy’s blog. A great read!

Malcolm Putman of the Dunstable Road CC and long term friend of the Willesden CC is inviting us all to take part in his Christmas Charity ride on 28th December. If you have a fancy dress – then wear it (Malcolm must surely be wearing his!!).
Starting from the Tilsworth Golf Club, Beds. LU7 9PU, just north of Dunstable (See map.) you will follow a 31 mile signposted route through some of Malcolm’s handpicked routes. All donations will go to the Keech Hospice.
Due to the nature of the event Malcolm can not accept entries on the line so please email Alison Putnam (alisonputman@icloud.com) for entry details.
Miles Back
John Wheatley, known only as “The Captain”, has given this years Fryathlon an Olympic flavour. In a transparent manoeuvre to get this prestigious Willesden event in to the 2016 games “The Captain” has spread the event over three purpose-less venues. Secrecy, cunning and a strict avoidance of paying his cafe bill have been his mantra…. the last two points being very closely linked
The full programme of events can now been revealed and your intense training schedules can now be honed for the (roll of drums!!) “The Fryathlon”.
All competitors will meet at the club run meeting point (ie outside Shane’s Nurseries, on the A40 in Denham) at 9:30am on Sunday, 7th December. Whereupon you will ride to the various Fryathlon venues across Bucks.
Event 1: The Downhill
Held on the A355 towards Beaconsfield
Event 2 – “The Fry”
To be consumed at the Deep Mill Diner on the A413 near Gt Missenden. Points will be awarded for every item of fried animal or vegetable consumed. If you haves eyes like fried eggs or fingers like sausages (even veggie ones) then take extra care of them during this part of the competition.
Event 3 – The Climb
The Hill climb on Rectory Hill, Amersham. Contents consumed in Event 2 to be retained throughout the duration of event 3.
Post event celebrations will followed before a quick wash and brush-up before dashing over to the WCC AGM to brag to all your clubmates.
Miles Back
REMINDER – The AGM takes places on Sunday, 7 December 2014, starting at 2.00 p.m., to be held in the Class Room (as last year).
Members are invited to come along and share their views and ideas.
Event: Willesden Cycling Club Annual General Meeting

Jane Moore’s Trike End to End has been accepted by the RRA.
So now its official!
Last Weekend Jane went to visit Eileen Sheridan who took the E2E women’s bicycle record in 1954, together with every other women’s RRA record avaialable whilst riding for the Hercules team.
It was quite a day. Yet the experiences are very similar.

The 2015 calendar-opening Westerley Winter Warmer is scheduled for Sunday 11th January. It starts just outside the M25 at Chalfont St Peter and heads into the Chilterns.
This year there are three versions. The long version is 110km (1200m of climbing), there is a medium route of 61km and, new this year, there is also a shorter version of around 44km. The long route is a pretty challenging winter ride which tackles several of the bigger climbs on the Chiltern ridge, while the medium route has Cryers Hill as its main climb. The new, short version is a very pretty route that misses out all the big hills and most of the (short) main road sections.
Entry is the same price as last year: £8/£4/£4 in advance, or £10/£5/£5 on the day.
There is a manned HQ (Chalfont St Peter Scout Hut), signed route and GPX tracks, computerised timing system and plenty of food before and after (including home made cake).
Those of you who rode last year will be pleased to hear that we have changed the route to avoid going up Botterill’s Lane, which always floods and so has a high risk of ice on a cold day. As a result, the ride has gained slightly in length, and now takes in some pretty lanes which were used in the original (pre-2013) route.
There’s more info on the website here, or please ask if you have any questions.
Hillingdon TTs
The Hillingdon TTs start on 8 April 2015, at 7:15, with ten rounds on alternate Wednesdays through until August.
This year there will be two separate categories for each event: non-aero/road bikes and TT bikes. There will be a points competition for each going over the whole series. Beginners and experienced riders welcome. There’s also more info here. Full details will follow nearer the time.
Regards,
Frank Proud

From Marcus:
Advance warning – 9th December 7pm on BBC2 Scotland (available on Sky (970) and Freesat (970)) Three Willesden riders (Ian, Martin and myself) went to north-west Scotland to ride a very tough 1300km Audax event in very challenging conditions (very high 20s and low 30s every day).
The event was filmed for the Adventure Show and will be broadcast as above, or available on iPlayer for a short while afterwards.

Alex Pierce picked up fourth in his first attempt at the match sprints on the track at Lee Valley, “I’ve never felt so tiny” he says referring to his competition!
Gildas Braine was there to see the action:
“Alex was AMAZING!!! He took down two of the big guns in his heat and quarter final to qualify directly to the semis. They were literally twice his size and had no idea what happened to them. But he got his tactics spot on in both, getting the jump and making a four or five bike-length gap with a lap to go that neither was able to close down. To finish fourth in what was a strong field was remarkable, and he made Jayne and me feel very proud to be wearing the Willesden Jersey last night. He was also the crowd favourite for the evening! Well done Alex.”
Photos complements of Dawn Fry
Jayne and Gildas were also spotted by Dawn’s camera in the bunch races.
Stuart Birnie went to Borrego Springs in Califotnia to take part in the 6-12-24 hours World Time Trial Championships. Riding in very windy conditions he covered 493 miles at an average speed of 20-5mph to take first place in the 30-39 cateogory as well as overall winner.
Former Willesden C.C. Member, Meurig James who held all the club’s time trial records before he left to work in Philadelphia, was a close 2nd covering 484 miles.
The track riders have been in action at Stratford and Jayne Paine is lying in 2nd place in the Women’s League after coming 2nd in the 30laps,25lap points and the elimination races.
Connor Woodford won the 30 laps scratch race and was 2nd in the elimination and is now placed 5th in the C league in which Alex Pierce is 10th after taking 4th place in the 30lap scratch race. (Events take place fortnightly on Thursday evenings)
Rich Cooper went to Minley Manor to take part in the Gorrick Brass Monkey’s Enduros Round 1 and in practically unrideable conditions, deep mud and rain, finished halfway down the field in 36th place in the 2hour category.
Great night for the Willesden last Thursday at the Olympic track at Stratford. The Club had five riders taking part Jayne Marianne Gildas Alex and Connor. All our riders rode very well with the highlights being a win for Connor in the 30 lap scratch plus 2nd in the elimination race. Jayne had a great night with 3rd in the 30 lap scratch 2nd in the points race and 2nd in the elimination. Alex rode very well in all his events with 3rd in the 40 lap scratch and was 5th in both the elimination and points race. Come along on the 18th December to see all our riders in action again.

Some Willesden jerseys spotted in Damon Peacock‘s latest video
Yep, you read that right! At the weekend Willesden CC rider Stuart Birnie romped home in first place at the 6-12-24 Hour World Time Trial Championships held in Borrego Springs, California.
In very windy conditions he covered 493 miles at an average pace of 21.5 mph to take first place in the 30-39 age category as well as the overall male win.
Hot on Stuart’s heels was (former) Willesden rider Muerig James, who came second in the 30-39 age category and second on the overall podium with 484 miles at 20.3 mph average.
As soon as Stuart can peel his hands off his low profile bars I’m sure he will send us more photos and a report on the ride. “Well Done Hippy” sounds rather weak and very British – in reality we are all completely awestruck with his performance and amazing achievement. Chapeau!
PS: Stuart (and the Willesden CC) also get a mention in the Australian press see here
Come along to the Olympic velodrome at Stratford this Thursday 20th November. Willesden riders will be competing from 7pm until 10pm and entry is only £2.00.
