It was very much a family affair with the Macilwaine Parrys taking first place in each of the age categories. Maximus Macilwaine Parry was first in the under 12s. Teddy Stoddard 2nd and Joint 3rd were Rae Tarbox and Ennis Barnett.

Laszlo Macilwaine Parry was first in the under 10s. Mabel Tarbox 2nd and Ella James 3rd.

Emile Macilwaine Parry was first in the under 8s with Logan Burrows 2nd and Aubrey Henderson-Kirk 3rd.

Well done to everyone who took part in the series and many thanks to those who gave up their time to help. Thanks also to Rob Mortlock the Regional British Cycling Coach for his help and support on the events.

Spring Chicken Road Race 2013 Report

After a terrible first race of 2013 the previous week, I was a bit unsure that all of the winter training I’d done had been worthwhile. It didn’t help that when both Kenny Ross and I were in the car park that it was horribly cold and the sight of lots of fast looking cyclists made me wished I’d stayed in bed.

Both Kenny and myself had chatted in the week about how to approach the race, I was concious that Colin Roshier was riding in our race and that he was likely to want to split the race up, whilst I normally try to get myself into a decent break away, most the races that I enter at my level tend to finish in a bunch sprint so I wasn’t sure how best to use my energy.

This was Kenny’s first Road race he was the first Willesden rider home from the recent reliability ride, so Kenny definitely has some good form. We really wanted to make sure we made something of the race.

856622_10151804338074392_1772974133_o

The first lap was really fast, everyone had fresh legs and despite the cold weather, they really wanted to race. It was quite early on that Colin made his first move and I happened to be in a good position to go with him. A couple of other riders jumped across but we weren’t able to put any distance between ourselves and the bunch. This situation repeated itself throughout the race.

The road surface was worse than I expected but I had been warned about this and I rode my training wheels and used pretty tough tyres as I didn’t want a puncture to ruin my race. As the race went on I realised that Colin was getting tired and a break away was unlikely to happen so I decided to rest a bit for the last lap and the eventual sprint.

578284_10151804334624392_1737517104_n

Kenny started to move up through the bunch and I think he had the legs for a sprint but about 2 miles from the end a rider fell. Kenny was caught behind the crash a little which effectively meant he wasn’t  in a position to sprint, a real shame because he’s been going so well.

I’d kept myself near the front and after a bit of fighting for position we started the final small climb, I was probably about 7th-8th place, just where I needed to be. Then there was a slight hesitation from the riders in front and all of a sudden two riders from GS Henley came flying past us on the right hand side. They had timed it really well as they had timed it so that they were able to carry their speed up the hill and onto the short finishing straight.

I hit the pedals as hard as I could to follow them and I was hoping they would fade before the line but they didn’t but I kept pedalling and held on and came over the line in 10th place. The race was won by James Locker of V-Sprint, who managed to get around the two GS Henley riders before the line. Full results below.

Thanks to Hemel Hempstead CC for organising the race and Adam and Karla from High Wycombe CC for the photos.

David Handley

Dave Handley and Steve Heffernan in a very tight sprint finish

Dave Handley and Steve Heffernan in a very tight sprint finish

Dave’s partner, Pat has asked me to let you all know that Dave passed away peacefully this morning after a long illness.

Dave was a gifted sprinter and motivator. His proudest moment was as the last British sprinter to reach the world championship podium, before the modern era. That was his bronze medal in the world amateur sprint championships of 1960.

As a motivator and organiser he led the Polytechnic CC dominance of national team pursuiting in the 1960’s which was considered a radical approach at that time by basing his team on sprinters on the basis they all had the necessary speed. He was also proud to be team manager of the track team at world championships.

At this time, funeral arrangements are yet to be made but Pat will be advising in due course. Of course we all commiserate with Pat and Dave’s family at this time.

In addition, Tom Newman who is the Westerley’s accredited Club Coach will be signing copies of his new book, ‘Cycle Road Racing’.

So make a note in your diaries for 8:30pm on Wednesday 20th March 2013.

The Westerley’s Club rooms are at the Northolt Rugby Club, Cayton Road, Greenford. To help with planning the catering please let Wendy Mears (Wendywearl@aol.com) know by preferably by 13thMarch.

Jayne going well in New South Wales Masters

Jayne’s Report from Australia

My total tally: 2 Golds, 2 Silvers. I didn’t race the sprint, but
seeing who
won it, I should have.

500mTT
I got gold (40.8s) , Trouty (Joanne
Troutnman) got silver with 42s
and Karen Thornton had a cup of tea and went
for 44s

Pursuit
It was just me and Karen Thornton, and I don’t think
pursuiting is
Karen’s thing, so I won that (2m 38.7s)

Points
All the age groups were run together, but with 2 sets of medals: one
set for the
under 45s and one set for the over 45s..
It was a fast race with the
youngsters driving the pace. I only
managed to snatch one point from them in
the first of the four
sprints. On the last lap, Trouty shot over everybody to
win the sprint
and the gold medal.

Scratch
This was just one race
for the 45+ age group.
It was really just a race between me and Trouty. She
has more sprint,
tactical ability and tenacity and I have more endurance. We
both new
what each of us would be doing. I would be attacking, and Trouty
would
be stuck to my back wheel. I thought I had managed to break her a
few
times, but the nipper little critter clung on in and managed to pip
me
to the post by about half a wheel.

Anyway me and Trouty went out a
celebratory Chinese last night and
neither of us can see straight today. So
the result there was a dead
heat I reckon.

xxJP

I wore my GB
skinsuit for the pursuit because it is very tight and
aero, but not very
comfy.
I wore my blue Willsden Nat Champs skinsuit for the Points and
500mTT.
I’m not really allowed to wear this one as I am no longer a
national
champion, but they don’t understand the significance of it here, so
I
can get away with it, and it’s my favourite.
I wore my long-sleaved
green Willesden skinsuit for the Scratch.

Basically I can wear whatever I
want here because they don’t know our club.

Many thanks to everyone who turned out for what turned out to be a glorious day’s riding. 69 riders signed on for the long route and 17 for the shorter loop, all enjoying the fantastic hospitality from the Pink Ladies.  Thanks to everyone who gave up their time to make the event a success, it’s much appreciated by me and by the riders.

Here are a few blurry pics from Bottrells Lane  (my camera died so I had to use my mobile. …sack the organiser!)

Isle of Wight Randonnee – 4/5th May 2013

SoozAndSue_IOW-730x384Each May Bank the Willesden have been going over to the Isle of Wight to ride this wonderful Randonnee.

A signature feature of this event is it outstanding value for money… it’s completely free to enter. You have a choice of the 100 Km round the island route (highly recommended) or a shorter 55km loop that takes in all the best the North East corner of the island has to offer.

The ride usually attracts around 4,000 riders, though I have to say that they are not all Willesden types – despite it being a freebie. There are half a dozen controls spread around the island and you can start and finish at any one. We usually start from Alverstone, just outside Sandown. The cake at the Yarmouth control is worth the trip on its own.

Wendy Mears is organising two nights B&B (4th and 5th May) at the St.Michaels Hotel lin Sandown which we have used for the last few years. The cost is very reasonable £31 per head per night (£15.00 for children up to 16 if sharing a family room). Please contact Wendy as soon as possible to reserve your place via: wendywearl@aol.com

Further details of the ride can be found at http://www.cycleisland.co.uk

Bob Kynaston, Westerley CC – Funeral Arrangements

Dear friends in the Willesden

You may have known our esteemed President, Bob Kynaston (and apologies if you didn’t and if this message is not relevant to you). I know some of you expressed an interest in attending Bob’s funeral and I have included details below.

But firstly, thank you for your kind messages of support. I have passed them on to Bob’s family.

Bob’s funeral will be on Thursday the 7th of February at 11.00, Woodcock Hill Cemetery (woodland area), Harefield Road, Rickmansworth, Herts, WD3 1PD. Family and very close friends (who have already been invited) will be with Wendy in the mud and rain for the few minutes of the internment.

Please feel free to go directly to the Grim’s Dyke Golf Club, Oxhey Lane, Hatch End Pinner, HA5 4AL‎, where they will be expecting you from 11.30 and the humanist (non-religious) celebration of Bob’s life will take place. Bob’s wishes were for no dark clothing (but yes to full colour cycling kit, and arrival by cycle); Bob has requested that flowers should not be sent (although cards would be welcome), but any money that would have been spent can instead be made as a donation to either Macmillan-cancer-nursing, or Cancer UK, or the Peace Hospice in Watford.

Tea and coffee will be available on arrival, and after the eulogy, food and soup will be served.
Please email Duncan Kynaston at westerley@westerley.plus.com to confirm names and numbers so we have an idea of how many to cater
for.

Kind regards

Roly Collicott
Westerley Vice President and Social Sec
