Here are edited highlights of both Tom’s and Janye’s Smithfield Nocturne races . Tom is featured at 6:35 and Jayne can be briefly seen at 9:47.
A full one hour programme of the meeting will be broadcast as follows –
Sky Sports 2: Tuesday 10th June, 10pm
Eurosport: Friday 13th June, 7.30pm
Channel 4: Saturday 14th June, 5.30am

Wow, wow, wow!! What a great weekend it was.
Tom Zittel won the Brooks Retro Criterium before a huge, noisy and excited crowd at Saturday night’s Smithfield Nocturne. Tom was riding a treasured early 1960s Claud Butler Super Torino, which was just about old enough to be his granddaddy! He narrowly missed a spill in the closing stages of the race but won by a vast distance over the second placed rider. The victor’s spoils were a bottle of bubbly a rather natty Brooks back pack. Tom filmed the entire race, which you can watch here.
Jayne Paine also rode in the the Nocturne, taking part in the penultimate race of the night, the Elite Women’s Criterium. It was a very high paced race and Jayne pulled out to save herself for Sunday’s National Masters Road Race Championships in Bedfordshire, which was due to start in less than 12 hours time! This proved to be an excellent strategy as Jayne picked up a silver medal, just missing out on gold by the shortest of margins. Jayne described the race as “Brutal….. it was just brutal!!”.

The whole weekend was rounded off by a big gathering of the Willesden in Willesden for a screening of the film “Pantani: The Accidental Death of a Cyclist” at the super little Lexi cinema in Kensal Rise.
This is just a stop press to pass on the good news and to congratulate Tom and Jayne on they fantastic achievements. More detailed reports to follow.

I will be leading a ride that will take us through several of the London Royal Parks and two of its cemeteries, it will feature the Thames, canal tow paths, a grand stately home, Soho, a quick blast around Regent Park and a visit to the Mausoleum of Richard Burton, the explorer, that is.
There will be a couple of bits of lifting bikes up and down a few steps and there maybe one or two short stretches along the Thames on earth/gravel (I can’t remember to be honest as its a while since I have cycled them), but it’s mainly roads, with some tarmacked cycle paths.
09:15ish Coffee/Tea/Biscuits
09:30 The ride will set off from my house
09:45 Official start from Willesden Junction station forecourt.
We’ll take a break when we feel like it. I have no particular place in mind, but there’s plenty en-route.
Around 2pm Finish at Three Bridges behind Ealing Hospital
Return to cars and Willesden Junction. We’ll pass Ealing Broadway and Ealing Common Stations en-route.
My address is 68 St Dunstans Avenue London W3 6QJ.
The last bit from the A40 to my house is a bit convoluted. For those of you without GPS, here is a routesheet (see map). It starts at the second set of lights after the Hanger Gyratory underpass – there are swish offices on the corner. Parking on-street is free and pretty safe. 68 is the one with a mature red Volvo Estate outside, come down the side with your bike to the back garden.
Acton North, Ealing North and Acton Town are all handy Underground Stations. Acton Central on the Overground is very close. Acton Mainline has no Sunday service.

You can of course wait at Willesden Junction if that’s handier – I’d not be so comfortable about recommending parking there.
The ride route (it may change a bit) – can be found at http://ridewithgps.com/routes/4954176
STOP PRESS (9th June 14) – Further screenings have now also been scheduled for Tuesday 17 Jun 2014 at 8:45 PM and Thursday 19 Jun 2014 at 6:40 PM.
Bookings must have been good! So thanks to everyone from the Willesden CC who supported Sunday’s first screening
Don’t forget that this Sunday there are loads of Willesden members going to the Pantani Screening and there are still tickets available so don’t miss out! Get more info.

In conjunction with a number of clubs, we are going to be running evening summer 10 mile time trials again this year, with a chance to win club medals.
Alex Pierce reports:
“There was a good showing from the Squadre Verde last night at Hillingdon. A well timed solo breakaway from Peter Dibben (Hargroves Cycles) wrapped up first place, with no one in the bunch interested in pulling him back so close to the finish. After a good lead out from Darryl Lusardi I managed to win the bunch sprint, taking second place and a tidy £8 profit. The ever improving Tony Lusardi came across the line in 14th, and Darryl finished 25th after his ‘Renshawesque‘ lead out.”
CALLING CLUB MEMBERS TO ATTEND THE MONTHLY MEETING AT THE HILLINGDON TRACK CLUB HOUSE AT 8.00 P.M. ON FRIDAY 6 JUNE 2014
IT WOULD BE A PLEASURE TO SEE SOME DIFFERENT FACES AT THE MEETING

Here goes with this week’s results.
Down at Hillingdon on Tuesday evening in the BC West Thames 3/4 event Tony Lusardi was 11th, son Darryl 14th and in spite of a puncture Ryan Fineston finished 19th.
On Sunday they rode in the supporting race for the Women’ Grand Prix being held at Hillingdon finishing Darryl 11th, Ryan 28th and Tony 34th.
At Black Park Rich Cooper was awarded 2nd place in the 3 lap category, his highest finish ever, in the Mountain Bike event organised by the West Drayton Mountain Bike Club. (pictured)
Jayne Paine went to Hog Hill on Thursday to finish in 2nd place.
At Welwyn track on Friday night Roger Woodford was 2nd in the 10 lap sprint. In the Hare and hounds event the hounds caught the hare and Roger lead out the sprint to win convincinly. The 10 mile event was run at a very fast pace finishing in 21 minutes with both Roger and young nephew Connor finishing in the leading group.
All for now,
Gladys
Over the May Bank holiday Jane Swain traveled up to Shropshire for the Tricycle association’s “Bruce Kingsford 50” on the Sunday. Conditions were cold wet and windy but she still managed to improve her time for the course by 8 minutes finishing in 2:52:38.
The following day she entered the classic “Anfield 100”, which again is on a tough rural course. Time was 5:58:26.

Willesden CC was the organising club for this event and a big thank you to all those members who turned out to help with Marshaling, timekeeping, pushing off and HQ kitchen duties. Whilst I have to fill in a few forms, organise members to help out and help out on any timing disputes, without Willesden members giving up their time early on a Sunday morning we could not run this event. A BIG THANK YOU, to all of you. I just hope you all managed to get some home made cake.
The event itself was a big success and I have received very positive feedback from the clubs and members who took part. 82 riders signed up, which is 20 more than last year and 70 riders completed the course on the day. We had one rider from Willesden, Nick McCollough who did a very respectable time of 1.00.06, only 6 seconds from the hour Nick !! The fastest time of the day went to Pete Lawrence from West Drayton MBC with a great time of 54.01.
On Monday 19th May Tom Zittel rode at Reading with a fine 3rd place in the scratch race. He followed this with 2nd in the devil and after this did a good ride in the 20k event going all the way to finish 4th in the senior b’s.
On Tuesday our Senior Green team rode at Hillingdon with Darryl Lusardi 17th Ryan Finestone 23rd and Tony Lusardi 29th.
Friday 23rd at Welwyn Roger Woodford was just outsprinted and finished 2nd in the Devil. Connor Woodford attacked off the front to gain 3rd place in the senior b points race.
On Sunday Jayne Payne rode the omnium at Herne Hill and was 6th in the 500m with 40.3 Then 1st in the points 8k – doing 12 laps off the front, 4th in the sprint .Then won the pursuit. So was lying 2nd overall……then missed out in the 8km scratch and got an overall of 5th.

Results flowing in from all areas this week.
In the Interclub Youth Team Time Trial organised by the Hillingdon Slipstreamers at Minet Park over a distance of 9.3 Km our team of Harvey Dash, Kye Lewis, Doune Henderson-Kirk and Connor Woodford were placed 3rd in the Boys Section. Hannah Keating was our only rider in the Girls section but finished 4th behind a team of 12 Hillingdon Slipstreamers.
Our track riders have been busy all week.
Tom Zittel was at Reading on Monday taking 2nd place in the Devil, 3rd in the Scratch and finishing for the 1st time in the 20Km event, wining 4th place in the B group.
Jayne Paine rode the Herne Hill Women’s Omnium gaining lst in the 8Kms points race after riding on the front for 12laps. She also won the 4 lap pursuit, was placed 4th in the Sprints and 6th in the 500m.
Connor Woodford also rode the track at Welwyn on Friday and took 3rd in the Junior 10lap points event.
Our time trialists entered in the Farnham R.C. 10 had to compete with the traffic on Saturday (Thank goodness QPR won!) Ed Packard arrived with no time to pump his tyres up hard only 3 minutes before he was due to start. Pete Cookson had the same problem with traffic, taking over 2hours to get to Farnham. Their times considering that and the weather conditions were 23.15 and 23.36. Third team member Brian Moon failed to make it to the start.
Ed stayed overnight at Barton Stacey to ride the Hounslow and District Wheelers 100 miles event and was disappointed to record 4.23.17.
It was the club’s turn to organised the West London Combine 25 on the Amersham Road and our only club member to ride was Nick McCullough, who from a field of 82 entries, finished in 8th place with a time of 1.00.06. (photo above)
Finally, several club members were invited to the celebration of Ruby and Nick Tidmarsh’s lives which took place at the Tithe Farm Social Club in South Harrow to enjoy a Hog Roast and to remember their achievements. (Nick died in March, aged 103, his wife died over 20 years earlier, but both of them donated their bodies to medical science so no funerals took place) Their sons Alec and Brian decided that a get together of family and friends would be a fitting tribute to the way they had enjoyed life both in the Willesden Cycling Club and the Tithe Farm Drama group. Nick’s death was reported on the back page of the Sports section in March.
Thats all for now,
Gladys
Its Friday! This video should help get you in the mood to get out on your bike or maybe even the Ditchling Devil on the 8th!
Audax Australia have produced this stunning tilt-shift time lapse video of the Alpine Classic; a 250k ride that attracted 2,200 participants.
Hi folks
A great time was had by all at the recent Curry Night!
In total we had 23 people book, and 19 came along on the evening and enjoyed the brilliant cuisine at Brilliant Restaurant in Southall, which came highly recommended by a number of members.
The evening was attended by members of varied ages and disciplines, from youth riders to veterans. It was especially good to witness club mates describing their recent adventures and accomplishments in their particular disciplines – from audax riders to trackies, road racers to time triallists; I think many attendees learned something new about a different aspect of club life.
A special (surprise!) presentation was also included in the evening. Club Captain John Wheatley presented Stuart ‘Hippy’ Birnie with a medal, a trophy and his own custom-made National Champion jersey for his achievements in the previous season, which you can see him modelling below. Congratulations to Hippy.
A very big thank you to everyone who came along and made it a convivial evening!
